CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Duke women's tennis program completed a rain-delayed day one at the ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday at the LTP Tennis Club.
Senior
Georgia Drummy made her opening round match count, defeating Pepperdine's Shiori Fukuda, 6-1, 6-4. Drummy would cruise in the opening set, facing little adversity until Fukuda broke serve early in the second set. Drummy was able to bounce back and secure a late service break of her own to move into the round of 16.
Drummy's next opponent has yet to be determined, as rain marred the original match schedule, forcing several matches, including Drummy's, to be delayed. Drummy would face either No. 29 Ayana Akli (South Carolina) or No. 16 Isabella Pfennig (Miami). The Dublin, Ireland native met Pfennig last season during ACC play, with Pfennig coming out on top 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Junior
Chloe Beck opened the day with a match against No. 22 Emma Antonaki of Mississippi State. Antonaki would start the match quickly, taking the opening set 6-1 behind strong serving. However, Beck had second set response, comfortably taking the set 6-2, despite Antonaki saving eight break points in the set.
The two would have a highly competitive third set, with Beck earning a chance to take the match at 6-5. However, the junior would come up just shy, falling in a third set tiebreaker 7-6 (3).
Senior
Kelly Chen will join Beck in the consolation draw, following a hard-fought defeat at the hands of No. 18 Salma Ewing of USC. The two were locked in tight sets, but Chen was unable to complete a comeback, falling 6-4, 6-3.
Rain forced the start of the doubles competition to be delayed, as Beck and sophomore
Karolina Berankova were set to face Elaine Chervinsky/Melodie Collard (Virginia). The match will now occur on Thursday at a to-be-determined time.
