EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. – Led by a top-10 finish from sophomore
Ian Siebers, the Duke men's golf team picked up a fifth-place finish at the Hamptons Intercollegiate, which concluded Tuesday at the Maidstone Club on Long Island.
Siebers bounced back from an opening 78 in adverse weather to shoot back-to-back rounds of 2-under 70 to finish in a tie for 10th at 2-over 218.
As a team, the Blue Devils carded a 2-under 286 in Tuesday's final round and finished the 54-hole event at 8-over 872, which was fifth in the 12-team field. Northwestern, Virginia and Georgia Tech tied for the team title at 4-under, followed by Liberty (+1) and Duke (+8) in the top five.
Siebers brought his tournament to a close in steady style as his unblemished 2-under 70 card included birdies on the par-3 fourth and the par-4 17th. He birdied five holes during his second round 70, which he completed early on Tuesday after Monday's play was suspended by darkness.
Sophomore
Jimmy Zheng was 3-over 219 for the tournament, including his final-round 74, and finished tied for 14th (73-72-74), while freshman
Luke Sample was 4-over 220 (74-71-75).
Senior
Quinn Riley also shook off Monday's wind and rain battered first round to fire rounds of 2-under 70 and 3-under 69. The Raleigh native finished tied for 25th at 5-over 221, with a strong final round that featured eight birdies. For the tournament's Riley's 14 birdies, tied with Zheng, were third-most in the field.
Also for Duke, freshman
Kelly Chinn was tied for 44th at 12-over 228 (77-78-73), while sophomore
Cameron Martinez-Piedra was 61st at 18-over 234 (85-74-75).
The Blue Devils have one event remaining on the fall portion of the schedule -- that is the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, set for Oct. 22-24 in Alpharetta, Ga.
