ELON, N.C. – The Duke softball program concluded its fall ball road slate with a 15-0 victory over Elon in a 10-inning exhibition game on Friday night in Elon, N.C.
With the win, the Blue Devils are now 8-0 this fall, outscoring opponents 71-3, while earning a third consecutive shutout.
The offense jumped out to a lead on the first batter of the game, as senior
Deja Davis hit a solo home run to start a six-run first inning. Junior
Gisele Tapia hit another solo home run just two batters later, while sophomore
Jala Wright opened her huge day at the plate with a two-RBI single. Freshmen
Kelsey Zampa and
Mariah Headen tacked on an additional RBI to help secure the big inning.
Wright would go on to add two more RBI thanks to a two-run home run to extend the lead even further. The Charlotte, N.C., native helped her own cause at the plate with four RBI on the day, while recording five strikeouts as the game's starter in the circle.
Sophomore
Francesca Frelick delivered one of the biggest hits of the day when she cleared the bases in the seventh inning on a three-RBI double. The Lexington, Mass., native went 3-for-3 on the day, helping to lead the offense into double digits.
The Blue Devils locked down the game with two more runs in the 10th inning, as sophomore
Claire Davidson and senior
Kyla Morris each recorded RBI singles.
In addition to Wright's five strikeouts, sophomore
Lillie Walker and senior
Shelby Walters added four more for another combined shutout in the circle. The trio allowed just one hit each, limiting the Phoenix to three hits in total.
The Blue Devils will conclude the fall ball slate with a final game against North Carolina A&T on Friday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. at Duke Softball Stadium, before its annual fall world series on Nov. 6.
