DURHAM – The Duke softball program will make one final road trip in its fall ball slate, as the Blue Devils travel to Elon for a 5 p.m., game on Friday. The Blue Devils have two more exhibition games and the fall world series remaining during the 2021 fall season.
With two more shutouts against Campbell, the Blue Devils improved to 7-0 and extended their huge run differential this fall. Duke has outscored the competition 56-3, while limiting opponents to no more than one run a game.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blue Devils competed in back-to-back five inning games against Campbell, winning game one, 7-0, and game two, 2-0, on Friday, Oct. 22. The Blue Devils recorded their third and fourth shutouts of the fall, with the first two coming against South Carolina and East Carolina earlier this month.
The long ball has paced the Blue Devils this fall and continued with three more home runs in game one. Graduate student
Jameson Kavel, senior
Caroline Jacobsen and senior
Kristina Foreman each hit home runs, while sophomore
Claire Davidson and senior
Shelby Walters combined for five shutout innings. Davidson was particularly sharp, allowing just one baserunner on a walk over three innings in the circle.
Offense was at a premium for both teams in game two, but it did not stop the Blue Devils power surge. Both runs came via solo home runs, as freshman
Kelsey Zampa hit her first home run of the fall to take a 1-0 edge. Junior
Felise Collins hit a towering blast over the camera well in center field to finish off the scoring at 2-0. Sophomore
Jala Wright and graduate student
Peyton St. George combined for five more scoreless innings, with St. George striking out four of six batters faced.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
After an historic 2021 season that saw the program's first ACC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance, the Blue Devils continue exhibition play this fall. Head coach
Marissa Young is back for her fifth season at the helm of the program, following a program-best 44-12 record last season.
Several members of the championship squad are back, including all four All-ACC honorees from a year ago. The first NFCA All-American in program history,
Deja Davis, is back for her senior year after hitting .389 with seven home runs, 28 RBI, seven triples and 14 stolen bases. Outfielder
Jameson Kavel is back as a graduate student, after earning All-ACC First Team honors following posting a .320 batting average, four home runs and 33 RBI over 56 games.
The decorated pitching duo of graduate student
Peyton St. George and senior
Shelby Walters is back to headline an experienced pitching staff. St. George was the ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player, All-ACC First Team honoree and pitched to a record of 18-8, with a 2.21 ERA over 158.2 innings, while striking out 199. Walters was equally effective, going 19-3 with a 1.28 ERA over 147.2 innings pitched, collecting 87 strikeouts.
MEET THE NEWCOMERS
The Blue Devils added eight new members to the team for the 2022 season. Seven freshmen; infielder
Jada Baker (Longwood, Fla.), pitcher/utility player
Kennedy Barron (Section, Ala.), infielder
Ana Gold (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), utility player
Mariah Headen (Greensboro, N.C.), utility player

Extra Innings Softball.
Also joining the team is sophomore pitcher
Jala Wright (Charlotte, N.C.), who comes home to her native North Carolina after her freshman season at Michigan State. Wright made 11 appearances and four starts in the circle as a rookie for the Spartans, pitching 25.0 innings and striking out 18 batters.
It's been a quick start for the newcomers, as Gold has three home runs this fall, Zampa hit a home run against Campbell and Wright has started with 12 straight scoreless innings of relief pitching.
