WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis tandems of
Karolina Berankova and
Georgia Drummy along with
Chloe Beck and
Margaryta Bilokin punched their respective tickets to the finals of the A1 and A2 doubles draws to lead a successful third day at the ITA Fall Regional Championships.
Additionally, senior
Kelly Chen and freshman
Emma Jackson advanced to the semifinals in the main draw of the A1 singles bracket.
Jackson secured her spot in Sunday's semifinal round with Duke's first win of the morning by besting Wake Forest's Casie Wooten in a three-set match. After falling 6-3 in the first set, Jackson returned the favor and took the second set, 6-3. With a final set needed to advance, Jackson left no doubt as she breezed to a 6-1 victory in the final set to claim the match.
Chen also advanced to the semifinal after she defeated Sophie Abrams from NC State. The senior from Cerritos, Calif., took the first set in a thrilling 7-6 (4) decision, but dropped the second to force a third set. Chen was able to hold serve and lock up the win over Abrams, winning 6-1.
More trips to the semifinal were up for grabs as the action moved to doubles, with Duke securing three of those spots after posting a 3-0 mark in the quarterfinal round. The pairings of Berankova and Drummy and Chen and graduate student
Eliza Omirou each posted 8-6 wins. Berankova and Drummy defeated NC State's Jaeda Daniel/Abigail Rencheli, while Chen and Omirou beat the Wake Forest duo of Wooten/Samantha Martinelli. Beck and Bilokin won their matchup over another Wolfpack duo, beating Amelia Rajecki/Sara Nayar, 8-4.
Berankova and Drummy along with Beck and Bilokin picked up wins in their next matches to remain undefeated on day three. Berankova and Drummy faced some early adversity in their matchup against South Carolina, but the Blue Devils were able to rally from behind and pick up the thrilling super tiebreaker win. After dropping the opening set Duke responded strongly to defeat Akli/Allie Gretkowski in set two. The final set was a tightly contested battle, but Berankova and Drummy held their ground and pulled out a 10-8 win to take the match 1-6, 6-0, 10-8. Beck and Bilokin beat UNC's Alle Sanford/Reilly Tran 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets.
Freshman
Ellie Coleman, Beck and Bilokin opened their day with singles play but all three ultimately came up short. Coleman lost to UNC's Cameron Morra, Bilokin dropped a match to the Tar Heels Carson Tanguilig and Beck dropped a straight set decision to Jaeda Daniel from NC State. Chen and Omirou fell in their doubles semifinal to Scotty/Crowley.
Both of Sunday's finals will come against teams from North Carolina. Berankova and Drummy are set to face Cameron Morra/Carson Tanguilig at 1:30 p.m. in the A1 bracket while Beck and Bilokin will square off against Elizabeth Scotty/Fiona Crowley to decide the winner of the A2 side at 3:30 p.m.
Jackson and Chen are both set to take the court for their semifinals at 11 a.m. Sunday afternoon. Chen will be pitted against Crowley while Jackson faces Ayana Akli of South Carolina.
