ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Led by a strong opening-round from sophomore
Jimmy Zheng, the Duke men's golf team began play in the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Championship on Friday at the Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course in Alpharetta, Ga.
The Blue Devils, who were solid up and down the lineup, fired an 8-under 280 as a team on Friday to sit in fourth place overall, five off the lead set by both Texas A&M and Pepperdine at 13-under par. East Tennessee State (-9) and Tennessee (-6) round out the top five of the stacked 15-team field.
Zheng's impressive opening-round 3-under 69 has the sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand in a tie for ninth through 18 holes. Sophomore
Ian Siebers and freshman
Kelly Chinn each carded 2-under rounds of 70 to sit in a tie for 14th. Freshman
Luke Sample fired a 1-under 71 and is tied for 26th, while senior
Quinn Riley posted a 1-over 73 and is tied for 36th.
Zheng caught fire near the turn with birdies on the par-4 seventh and par-5 ninth to turn in 1-under 35. The sophomore kept the pedal to the metal on the back, starting on the par-4 10th in dramatic fashion when he holed out from the fairway for eagle with an 8-iron from 158 yards away. He followed with a birdie on the par-5 11th to get to 4-under, and had it to 4-under again with a birdie on 17th before finishing the day at 3-under.
The back nine was also kind to Siebers, who found himself 2-over through 10, before his eagle on the par-5 11th got him back on level terms. Birdies on the 15th and 18th allowed the Bellevue, Wash., native to shoot a 3-under 33 on the back and 2-under 70 for the day.
Pepperdine's Joe Highsmith is the day one leader as his 9-under 63 was one shot off the tournament's 18-hole record.
For Saturday's second round, Duke is paired with East Tennessee State and Stanford and the teams are off the 10
