DURHAM – Duke senior wide receiver Jake Bobo has been tabbed a nominee for the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy.
The award is given annually to the player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Bobo, a 6-5, 215-pound North Andover, Mass., native has been instrumental in Duke's offensive presence throughout his four years. In 39 career games (20 starts), he has registered 101 receptions for 1,199 yards with three touchdowns. In seven games this year, 27 of his 49 receptions have resulted in a first down. Bobo also became the first Duke receiver to record back-to-back games with 100-plus yards receiving since T.J. Rahming did so in 2017.
In the community, Bobo has volunteered his time working with Habitat for Humanity building houses, made visits to the local children's hospital, and participated in Duke's Reading with the Blue Devils program. Bobo has also stepped up to be a team ambassador, leading efforts to support diversity and inclusion by coordinating education and roundtable discussions within the Blue Devil program and the local community. While doing this, he collaborated with teammates, coaches, and staff, to make Duke Football, Duke Athletics, and the Duke Community a more educated and accepting environment for people of all walks of life.
Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities' Sports Information departments and closed on October 15. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 3 and finalists will be announced on Nov. 23.
The formal announcement of the 2021 recipient will be made on Dec. 9 on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN and the presentation of the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy will occur on Feb. 25, 2022 at the 53rd All Sports Association Awards Banquet in Fort Walton Beach.
