NEW YORK – Redshirt senior Jack Wohlabaugh was named a nominee for the 2021 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award on Tuesday.
Ten times during the 2021 college football season, three inspiring student-athletes from all levels of college football who have overcome injury, illness, or other challenges, are recognized as Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Nominees by a panel of writers, editors, and sports information directors from CoSIDA, The Associated Press and Touchdown Illustrated.
Wohlabaugh, a three-year starter for the Blue Devils, had two season-ending injuries, a left ankle injury requiring surgery that cost him the final three games of the 2019 campaign and a torn right anterior cruciate ligament in his knee prior to the 2020 season that forced him to miss the entire year. Despite the season-ending injury in 2020, the native of Akron, Ohio, was still voted to be a captain by his teammates.
The 6-4, 305-pound starting center was fully healthy by the first week of training camp this year and regained his starting position. With his leadership, the offensive line has been a bright spot for the Blue Devils, helping lead them to average 27 points, 203.9 rushing yards and 268.57 passing yards per contest.
Wohlabaugh is currently enrolled in Duke's continuing studies program, after graduating in May 2020 with a sociology degree and certificate in markets and management.
In December, three of the 30 nominees will be chosen as winners of the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award and will be recognized at a special ceremony during the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1, 2022, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
