DURHAM – Despite some late game heroics from junior
Scotty Taylor, No. 9 Duke men's soccer (9-3-0, 4-2-0 ACC) was outlasted by No. 23 Clemson (10-3-0, 4-2-0 ACC), falling 3-2 in overtime on Friday night in Koskinen Stadium.
Â
Sophomore
Peter Stroud led the team with a goal and an assist, while Taylor scored the game tying goal to send the game to overtime. Sophomore
Nick Pariano added an assist, while goalkeeper
Eliot Hamill made four saves. Clemson got goals from Ousmane Sylla, Hamady Diop and Luis Felipe Fernandez-Salvador.
Â
Both teams traded blows in an evenly matched first half that ended at 0-0. Each goalkeeper made just one save, with freshman
Shakur Mohammed earning the best chance of the half, when Clemson goalkeeper George Marks turned aside Mohammed's low grounder towards the bottom left part of the net in the 28th minute.
Â
The game began to open up in the second half, with the Tigers striking first in the 54th minute. A loose ball in the box found the feet of Sylla, who tucked it past an out of position Hamill to take a 1-0 lead.
Â
Later in the half, the Blue Devils earned a free kick just outside its own box, where
Lewis McGarvey immediately fired a through-ball to a streaking Taylor. Taylor beat his man into Clemson's box and was taken down by Diop by from behind, who earned a yellow card and gave the Blue Devils a penalty kick. Stroud was called upon to take the kick and buried it in the 62nd minute to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
Clemson was quick to respond, scoring in the 77th minute on a Diop header that was a result of a Fernandez-Salvador corner kick, to make it 2-1. With limited time left, the Blue Devils began to press forward for shots and put the Tigers defense on its heels.
Â
Sophomore
Thorleifur Ulfarsson nearly had the equalizer, after the Blue Devils drew a foul just outside the Clemson box in the 82nd minute. Ulfarsson ripped his set piece shot off the cross bar, narrowly missing his 10th goal of the season. However, the Blue Devils next shot would prove more fruitful.
Â
With the clock ticking down, Stroud sent a pass into the box that found its way to Pariano on the wing. A one touch cross by Pariano found the foot of Taylor, who tipped it past an outstretched Marks and tied the game with 42 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Â
However, the Tigers started out overtime with the game winner less than a minute in, as Fernandez-Salvador earned a takeaway and got around a sliding Hamill to win the game for the Tigers.
Â
The Blue Devils will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 19 when they travel to Furman for a 7 p.m. game to complete the non-conference slate. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
