DURHAM – Duke women's basketball head coach
Kara Lawson and graduate student
Jade Williams attended the ACC Media Day Wednesday at the Charlotte Marriot City Center along with members of the other 14 league schools. Â
"Our team is definitely excited," said Lawson. "To not only get a chance to play but getting our fans back in Cameron. We didn't have any fans last season. It is the best home court in the country. It will be exciting for our group. We also have a lot of new players. So, just trying to integrate them as quickly as we can."
Lawson, in her second season as head coach of the Blue Devils, added nine new student-athletes to go along with five returners ahead of the 2021-22 campaign. Duke's roster includes five players that were McDonald's All-Americans, six that were Jordan Brand All-Americans and seven that represented their respective countries as members of junior or senior national teams in FIBA tournaments. Â
"We have a lot of new faces and talent on our team," said Lawson on the new additions to the team. "Certainly, a lot of talent in the gym when we practice. Trying to integrate them playing together is a challenge, I think, we all as coaches face. You get a team at the start of a season and you have to figure how to get them to play together. We are progressing in that way and that is the best way I can say it. They are improving and getting better. Not only do we have nine new players, it is a new system for them to."
Lawson and Williams did interviews with ESPN, Bally Sports, ACC Network, ACC Network Extra and Turner Sports, while doing photoshoots with ESPN and the ACC. Williams went live on the set with Packer & Durham and Lawson went on with the Nothing But Net crew.
"I am mostly excited to be able to take advantage of the things that I took for granted last year that got taken away because of COVID," said Williams. "I think the traveling, the prep, warmups, fans were all things I anticipated on happening, because I have been playing basketball for a long time and got used to.  It was all taken away suddenly. That is the main priority for me. Being able to be grateful to have them back again."
After playing only four games a year ago due to COVID-19, Lawson and her staff have been working hard on the court with the Blue Devils and on the recruiting trail to build a championship team.
"We want to be one of the best programs in the country," said Lawson. "We want to compete at the highest level and compete with the best teams. That is the vision. Now we have to do the work to try to get there. I think where we are today versus where we were when I took the job, we have made a lot of progress in terms to getting to that point. We are not there yet. We will just keep working to try to get there with the other best programs."
The Blue Devils will get the season rolling Nov. 4, with an exhibition contest against Wingate and then will officially open the 2021-22 regular season Nov. 9 against Winthrop at 7 p.m., live on ACC Network Extra.
