DURHAM, N.C. – The 10th-ranked Duke women's tennis team defeated Furman (5-2) Sunday afternoon in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 3-1 as the Paladins dip to 1-4.
"Furman is sneaky good," head coach
Jamie Ashworth said. "I told the girls even before we hit in our warmup that we had to be emotionally ready to play. It was a tough week after last weekend, but we have to move forward. We had to make sure we came out ready to play and for the most part, we did that."
Duke secured the doubles point with victories on courts two and three.
Kelly Chen and
Georgia Drummy were quick to get off the court first with a 6-0 win on court three over Maggie Pate and Ellie Schoppe before
Chloe Beck and
Karolina Berankova outlasted Madison Dillon and Maryann Rompf (6-3) on court two.
Heading into singles play, No. 29 Beck made quick work to secure a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court five over Furman's Pate. With the dub, Beck improves to 5-2 on the young spring season.
No. 111 Chi was next off for Duke to bring its lead to 3-0. On court three, Chi defeated Dillon (6-3, 6-3) for her sixth singles win this season.
Junior
Margaryta Bilokin clinched the match for the Blue Devils on court four. Ranked No. 44 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), Bilokin defeated Rompf (6-1, 6-2) for her sixth singles win.
Bilokin and Chi's six wins tie for a team high this season.
Duke collected its fifth point of the match with a win on court two as No. 28 Drummy defeated Adams (6-1, 7-5). With the victory, Drummy elevates to 5-2 in singles action.
Furman's Schoppe earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 95 Berankova on court six for the Paladin's first point of the contest.
The last match of the day game down to a super tiebreak on court one. No. 15 Kozarov of Furman outlasted No. 8 Chen 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (4) in the third set super tiebreak.
"We have to stay healthy," Ashworth said. "We've played good doubles and we've won almost all our doubles points, but we can't rest on that. We have to keep improving. We have to try to put ourselves in pressure situations in practice."
Duke will return to the court Sunday, Feb. 14 for a 2 p.m., match against Appalachian State.
