DURHAM, N.C. – After a two-week break of action, the 11th-ranked Duke women's tennis team returned to the courts Sunday afternoon in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center and registered a 7-0 victory over Appalachian State University.
With the win, Duke moved to 4-1 on the season, while the Mountaineers fell to 1-2. The Blue Devils also collected their 49th straight home win in Durham, N.C.
"It was a good, clean match for us," said Duke head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "One of the things that we talked about before the match was playing the ball and not playing our opponent no matter who is on the other side of the net; doing the right things, playing disciplined tennis, playing to the right targets, playing to smart targets and despite being the better team we wanted to make sure we were getting better and I thought we did a good job with that."
For the ninth straight match, Duke took the early lead by grabbing the double doubles point. The Blue Devil duo of
Kelly Chen and
Georgia Drummy won their fifth straight match with a 6-0 victory over Ksenia Aleshina and Sandra Anglesjo on court two.
On court one, Duke's tandem of
Meible Chi and
Margaryta Bilokin knocked off Maria Jose Zacarias and Teodora Sevo, 6-0, to clinch the point for the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devil team of
Hannah Zhao and
Ema Lazic were leading, 4-2, over Virginia Poggi and Helena Figueras on court when the point was clinched.
Duke came out in singles on fire winning the first two points on all six courts.
On court three, 29th-ranked
Chloe Beck was impressive winning 6-0, 6-1 in only 40 minutes over Aleshina to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Duke took a 3-0 lead in the match as Chi notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sevo, which improved the graduate student to 7-2 on the season. Seeing action in her first dual match action of the season, Zhao used a 6-1, 6-0 victory to register her first singles win of 2021.
Bilokin, who is ranked No. 44 in singles and from New Canaan, Conn., clinched the victory for Duke with a 6-0, 6-1 ledger over Poggi on court No. 4. The Blue Devil junior moved to 7-2 on the season.
Seeing action on court No. 1 for the first time in her short Duke career, 28th-ranked Drummy improved to 6-2 on the season with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Zacarias.
Freshman Karolina Beranova, who is from Prague, Czech Republic, closed the match on court five with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Figueras.
Duke will close the non-conference portion of the schedule Wednesday, Feb. 17 as the Blue Devils host VCU at 2 p.m., inside Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
"I told them afterwards that this is a big week for us," added Ashworth. "It is a big week practice wise and we have one more match before we get into the ACC schedule, which is as tough of a conference as any in the country. We have done a really good job as a conference putting ourselves in position to be the best in the country, but what that means is every match is going to be a battle. Every match is tough. It doesn't matter if we are playing home or away, everything is a battle. We are looking forward to really seeing who we are right now."
