Duke Defeats UNC Wilmington in Sunday Matinee, 7-0

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke finished the weekend undefeated after downing UNC Wilmington, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.

The Blue Devils evened their overall record to 2-2 thanks to Sunday's win and their victory against Campbell on Friday. The Seahawks dip to 0-1 to start the year.

Sophomores Michael Heller and Samuel Rubell earned Duke's first win in doubles action when they defeated Gabriel Hurtado and Davide Innocenti, 6-2, on court three. The sophomore-senior duo of Andrew Zhang and Edu Güell then clinched the doubles point for the Blue Devils on court two when they took down Michael Copeland and Dillon Gooch, 6-3. The No. 55 ranked doubles team of senior Sean Sculley and sophomore Garrett Johns' match against No. 27 Brunco Caula and Daniel Groom went unfinished at 5-4 in favor of the visitors.

Duke continued its momentum in singles action by not dropping a single set for the second consecutive outing. Rubell jumpstarted things by making quick work of Copeland (6-1, 6-1) on court four. Johns then followed
on court one, taking the win over Caula (6-2, 6-3) to hand the home side a 3-0 advantage.

A few minutes later, rookie Andrew Dale clinched the Duke win when he defeated Hurtado, 6-0 and 6-2, on court five.

Fellow classmate Faris Khan then registered his second straight dual win on court six after he took down Bekhzad Rasamatov in comeback fashion (1-6, 6-0, 6-3). Güell was next to finish as he continued Duke's winning ways downing Innocenti, 6-4, 6-3, on court two. Finally, Zhang's match was exciting to the finish as he outlasted Groom in a second-set tiebreaker (7-6 [5]) after earning the 6-1 win in set one.

The Blue Devils are back on the road when they travel to SEC foes Tennessee and Kentucky on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Duke will face off against the Volunteers at 1 p.m., before meeting up with the Wildcats at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available for both matches.
