Duke Battles but Falls Short at No. 10 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Duke dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 10 Tennessee on Friday afternoon at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.

The loss dips the Blue Devils to 3-2 overall and 0-2 against top-25 opponents this season. The Volunteers continue their impressive run to start the 2021 campaign and shift to 7-0 on the year.

The home side took the opening doubles match after Giles Hussey and Mark Wallner defeated Michael Heller and Faris Khan, 6-2, on court three. The Blue Devils would make things interesting though as the No. 55 doubles team of Sean Sculley and Garrett Johns pulled Duke even at 1-1 following their 6-4 victory on court one. The stage was then set, the doubles point would come down to the results of court two. Unfortunately, the Vols used a late service break to take down Edu Güell and Andrew Zhang, 7-5.

Already facing a 1-0 deficit heading into singles action, the Blue Devils couldn't pull off the comeback against their nationally ranked foe dropping matches on court five, two and one to hand the Vols the 4-0 victory.

Luca Wiedenmann registered Tennessee's second point of the day after he earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Samuel Rubell at the No. 5 position. The Vols added their third point following Johannus Monday's victory over Güell 6-3, 6-3, on court two. The home side then clinched the match on court one thanks to No. 24 Adam Walton's 6-2, 6-3 win over Johns.

Andrew Dale and Wallner went unfinished at the No. 6 position with Dale leading the match 7-6 (5), 4-1. Sculley and Zhang were also not able to finish on court three and four, respectively. Sculley dropped his opening set 6-4 with Martim Prata but was leading 4-3 when his match was halted. Zhang defeated Hussey in his opening set 6-3 but was trailing 4-3 in the second set.

The Blue Devils will be back on their home court on Feb. 14 when they host Furman at 11 a.m. in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. All matches this weekend will be closed to the public per Duke Athletics COVID-19 protocol.
