CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 23 Duke men's tennis dropped a hard-fought battle against No. 20 South Carolina, falling 4-1 in its first dual match of the season at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Sunday morning.

South Carolina handed
Edu Güell and
Andrew Zhang's first doubles loss of the season on court three (6-2). The doubles point would be a battle between courts one and two, but the Gamecocks' No. 59 Raphael Lambling and Phillip Jordan claimed the point with a 7-5 win over No. 46
Luca Keist and
Michael Heller. Doubles action with Duke's No. 55
Sean Sculley and
Garrett Johns went unfinished at 5-5 versus No. 44 Daniel Rodrigues and Connor Thomson.

Trailing 1-0 heading into singles play, Duke took the first set on two courts with Sculley winning 7-5 on court three and Zhang (6-4) on court four. South Carolina picked up the first singles match on court two as No. 81 Lambling defeated Güell (6-4, 6-0).

The Gamecocks upped its lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court six, but Zhang gave Duke its lone point with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Toby Samuel on court four to make it 3-1 overall.

South Carolina secured the match on court five as Phillip Jordan edged sophomore
Samuel Rubell (6-4, 7-5). Playing to clinch, the singles matches on one and three went unfinished.

Duke returns to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. to play in the consolation match against Northwestern.
