ATLANTA – The sixth-ranked Duke women's tennis team started the 2021 ITA Kickoff Weekend on a high note with a 4-1 victory over No. 22 Michigan Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.
With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 2-0 this season as the Wolverines suffer their first loss of the season.
The Blue Devils captured the doubles point for the second time this season to give them the upper hand heading into singles action.
"I thought our doubles was the best it's been," head coach
Jamie Ashworth said. "We did a good job of holding our serve which is something we've struggled with a bit. I told them after that we did a good job playing with energy and a good job of finishing points. We're playing a team in Michigan that likes to play fast and is used to a lot of indoor tennis. The doubles point was a great win for us."
Chloe Beck and
Karolina Berankova defeated Alyvia Jones and Andrea Cerdan (6-2) on court two before
Kelly Chen and
Georgia Drummy secured a 6-4 victory over Kari Miller and Bella Lorenzini on court three.
Graduate
Meible Chi, who is ranked No. 111 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), secured Duke's first point in singles with a 6-3, 6-2 court four victory over No. 71 Cerdan. The Weston, Fla., native is now 5-1 this season.
No. 28 Drummy was next off the court for the Blue Devils. The Dublin, Ireland, native defeated Chiara Lommer (6-3, 6-2) for her fourth win of the young season.
Michigan answered with its first point of the match. Jaeden Brown secured a 6-1, 6-3 upset over No. 44
Margaryta Bilokin on court five.
Sophomore Beck clinched the match for the Blue Devils on court three and improves to 4-1 this spring. Beck, who is ranked No. 29 by the ITA, took down No. 101 Jones (6-3, 6-3) to allow Duke to advance to tomorrow's ITA Kickoff Weekend finale.
"We have to do a better job in our singles by being aggressive and not sitting back waiting for someone to miss," Ashworth said. "We got a little bit too far behind the baseline in singles today but with the more matches we play, the more comfortable we become."
The Blue Devils will now face No. 12 Georgia Tech Sunday at 2 p.m., with the winner advancing to the 2021 ITA National Team Indoor Championship, scheduled for Feb. 5-7.
