THE OPENING TIP
- After their first scheduled meeting was postponed by COVID-19 protocols in late December, Duke and Pittsburgh square off Tuesday night in the Steel City in a key battle of teams tied for fourth place in the ACC standings at 3-1.
- The Blue Devils have won five straight over the Panthers and lead the all-time series 13-7, including 6-3 on the road (3-1 at the Petersen Events Center) and 7-1 in ACC regular season contests.
- Former Duke standout Jeff Capel is in his third season as Pitt's head coach. He is one of nine former Coach K players now serving as a head coach at the Division-I level or in the NBA.
- The Blue Devils have deployed seven different starting lineups through eight games, with only sophomore Matthew Hurt starting all eight games.
- Hurt leads the ACC in scoring at 19.63 points per game and is the ACC's only player ranked in the league's top five for scoring, rebounding (8.5, third) and field goal percentage (.530, fifth).
- Hurt's +9.89 points per game improvement from last season leads all returning ACC players.
- The watch list candidate for the Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy, who has also been named both ACC Player of the Week and Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week last week, Hurt has scored 17+ points in seven consecutive games this season after having four such games last season. Three of his four career double-doubles have come in this season's first eight games.
- Freshman Jeremy Roach scored a career-high 22 points at Virginia Tech to lead the Blue Devils in scoring for the first time in his career. He is averaging 14.6 points over Duke's last five games, after averaging 5.3 over the first three games.
- Senior Jordan Goldwire leads the ACC in both steals (2.88) and assist/turnover ratio (+2.43), while ranking fourth in assists (4.25). He is the only player ranked in the league's top five for each.
- Duke is 33-5 following its last 38 losses.

Duke is 13-7 all-time versus Pitt, which includes a 7-1 mark since the Panthers entered the ACC in the 2013-14 season … Under Coach K, the Blue Devils are 7-2 in the series … This marks the series' third meeting with former Blue Devil player and associate head coach

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Pitt brings a 7-2 record into the contest and is in a three-way tie for fourth place in the ACC standings with Duke and Florida State … The Panthers, who returned from a two-week COVID pause on January 6, have won two straight and seven of their last eight including a 96-76 win over Syracuse on Saturday … Sophomore forward Justin Champagnie returned from injury in the Syracuse victory to post his fourth double-double with 24 points and 16 rebounds. He is the only Division I player averaging 17+ points and 12+ rebounds per game … Champagnie and
Matthew Hurt are two of the four players ranked in the ACC's top 10 for scoring, rebounds and field goal percentage … The Panthers have three players among the ACC's top-20 leading scorers in Champagnie (18.71, second) Au'Diese Toney (15.88, 11th) and Xavier Johnson (15.11, 14th) … The Panthers are allowing just 65.3 points per game (fifth in the ACC), and lead the ACC in both field goal defense (.391) and three-point defense (.259 -- fifth-best in the NCAA).

AP POLL STREAK SNAPPED
With Duke falling from the AP Top 25 this week, it snaps a streak of 91 consecutive polls that the Blue Devils had been ranked, which was the nation's second-longest active streak and the fourth-longest streak in program history … The last time Duke was not ranked was February 8, 2016 … Just 10.5 percent of Duke's games in the Coach K era have been as an unranked team (145) and the Blue Devils are 82-63 (.566) in those games … Duke has been ranked in 461 of the last 466 polls … Duke was ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press preseason poll on Nov. 9, and the Blue Devils have now been ranked in the top 10 at least once in 25 consecutive seasons -- the longest active streak nationally by a decade (Kansas, 15).
This marked the 13th consecutive season that the Blue Devils have debuted in the top 10.
