NEED TO KNOW
• The Blue Devils will play the first home contest at Duke since the COVID-19 shutdown in March. Last contest was March 11 as softball defeated Elon, 5-1.
• Duke won 4-3 in overtime against Wake Forest in the season opener as
Marykate McGuire scored two goals over the final 8:05 of the match.

Marykate McGuire was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals and assisting on another at WFU.

Lily Nabet were voted captains for the 2020 campaign.
• The Blue Devils brought the fifth-ranked recruiting class to Durham this year, marking the ninth-straight year Church has delivered a top 10 signing class.
DUKE VS. VIRGINIA...
Duke and Virginia will meet for the 44th time in school history with the Cavaliers leading the series 19-16-8. The Blue Devils had won three straight matches, but are 0-2-1 over the last three contests. In games played in Durham, N.C., Duke owns a 6-8-4 mark.
Robbie Church has totaled a 10-15-3 record versus the Cavaliers.
Over the last seven matches in the series, the contest has been decided in a tie or by one goal.
WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR...
In the regular season in Charlottesville, Va., Duke and Virginia battled to a 0-0 draw in double overtime. The Blue Devils had to travel back to Virginia in the ACC Tournament and fell, 1-0.
HOME OPENER...
The Blue Devils are an impressive 27-2-2 in home openers in school history, and have won five out of the last six opening games inside Koskinen Stadium with the other being a tie against Georgetown a year ago.
NO BETTER PLACE THAN HOME...
Duke will welcome Virginia in the home opener Thursday, which will mark the first of five straight home matches for the Blue Devils. In fact, those five home matches are all Duke will have this season. The Blue Devils will close the fall campaign with five consecutive road contests.
MCGUIRE IS GOLDEN AT WAKE FOREST...
Junior
Marykate McGuire scored two goals over the final 8:05 at Wake Forest in the season opener to push Duke past the Demon Deacons, 4-3, in overtime.
With under three minutes remaining in regulation and Duke trailing 3-2, McGuire collected the equalizing goal with 2:16 on the clock to send the match to overtime, off assists from
Mia Gyau and
Sophie Jones. Then at the 95:08 mark, McGuire showcased some impressive footwork doing a 360 degree turn and finished with her left foot near the right post to give Duke the golden goal victory, 4-3, off assists from
Taylor Mitchell and Jones. The goal was the sixth-quickest in overtime in Duke history.
McGuire attempted a school-record 10 shots and collected her second multi-goal performance of her career. She was rewarded for her efforts this week being named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week.
HEY, I KNOW YOU!...
Maggie and
Delaney Graham both played at Tophat soccer with Talia Staude of Virginia, while also playing high school basketball together at The Westminster Schools.
Duke's
Katie Groff played club soccer with Lane Rouse and Peyton Goldthwaite of Virginia each of her years in high school. Groff and Goldthwaite played indoor soccer together since they were 10 years old and spent every year together in club soccer since then.
Blue Devil sophomore
Ruthie Jones and Virginia's Laughlin Ryan played club soccer together for about 10 years starting at Charlotte United FC and then Charlotte Soccer Academy. They live close by so they carpooled to practice together for years. Jones and Laughlin are very close friends in life and in soccer.
Freshman
Olivia Migli and Virginia's Alexis Theoret are good friends from Club soccer with FC Virginia.
JONES COLLECTS CAREER HIGH...
After collecting one assist over 10 matches as a freshman, sophomore
Sophie Jones registered two assists in the season opener at Wake Forest. Jones is one of the top play-makers in the ACC and is coming off suffering a torn ACL during her rookie campaign and only playing 10 contests.
MULTIPLE GOALS IN SEASON OPENER...
Duke junior
Marykate McGuire collected two goals in the season opener at Wake Forest. She became the 10th Blue Devil to score two goals in a season opener in school history -- Taylor Racioppi (2015), KayAnne Gummersall (2009, 2008), Carolyn Riggs (2003), Alison Sanders (2001), Gwendolyn Oxenham (2000), Emily Feeney (1997), Kelly Walbert (1995), Caitlin Connolly (1990, 1989) and Katie Spencer (1988).
EXPERIENCED GROUP...
Duke returns 10 starters and 21 letterwinners from a year ago to make up a very experienced squad for head coach
Robbie Church. The Blue Devils' entire backline is back with
Taylor Mitchell,
Delaney Graham,
Caitlin Cosme and
Mia Gyau featuring a combined 14,275 minutes, 179 games played and 147 starts over the last four years.
TRIO OF CAPTAINS...
In a vote by the team, a Duke will boast a trio of captains for the 2020 campaign --

Caitlin Cosme and
Lily Nabet.
JUNIOR DUO LEADING THE OFFENSE...
The junior duo of
Mackenzie Pluck and
Marykate McGuire headlined the Blue Devil offensive efforts last season. The two held the top two spots in points for Duke last year, while ranking first and third, respectively, in goals scored.
McGuire led the goal-scoring effort for Duke with her team-leading nine goals in 2019. The Portsmouth, R.I., native ranked second on the team in points with 21.
Pluck ranked tied for first on the team in points (22), assists (6) and goals (8). The North Wales, Pa., native registered two of Duke's four multi-goal games last season.
WE'RE BACK!...
A number of Blue Devils are making their return to the pitch in 2020, after being sidelined with injuries a year ago.
Sophie Jones (knee),
Mia Gyau (achilles),
Julia Burnell (knee) and
Sydney Simmons (achilles). All four missed a combined 61 matches in 2019.
GRAHAM ON APPLE MUSIC & SPOTIFY...
Not only is
Delaney Graham an All-ACC standout on the soccer field, she is an outstanding singer. This past March, Graham her Duke a cappella group Lady Blue released four songs on Apple Music and Spotify. The EP is called Dandelion and the song, 66 Days, features Graham as the lead solo. Graham has also sang the national anthem at a Duke soccer and baseball game, while also singing "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys at Duke STARS as a freshman.
FLYING AWAY...
Over quarantine,
Sydney Simmons took time to get her Private Pilot's License (PPL). She had explored this before coming to college but didn't have time. When sent home in March, she started flying again and decided she wanted to put the time in to acquire her license. It took her three months during quarantine to complete all of the requirements and she ended with about 50 hours of flying. Her father, Kent, is an airline pilot and her mom, Kristin, is an air ambulance pilot for a children's hospital.

GOALKEEPER BATTLE...
Duke features three goalkeepers once again in 2020 and qualify keepers in that. Between redshirt senior
Brooke Heinsohn, sophomore
Ruthie Jones and junior
Holly Stam head coach
Robbie Church has one of the deepest groups of goalkeepers in his time at Duke. Last year, Heinsohn started all 20 matches and notched five shutouts. As a team, the keepers combined to collect eight shutouts.
SISTER DUO...
For the third time in school history, Duke will feature a pair of sisters on the same team with Delaney and
Maggie Graham on the 2020 roster. They join Ashley and Avery Rape, who played with the Blue Devils together in 2010 and 2011. Duke also featured Kelly and Erin Hathorn that played together in 2005 and 2006.
In the ACC in 2020, there are five sets of sisters on the rosters -- Clemson (Makenna and Maliah Morris), Notre Dame (Ellie and Erin Ospeck), Virginia Tech (Kendall and Molly Feighan) and Boston College (Michela and Samantha Agresti).
MEDICALLY RETIRED...
After suffering through numerous injuries the last two seasons, senior
Natasha Turner has decided to medically retire from collegiate soccer heading into the 2020 campaign. She will help in a managerial role this season.
BLUE DEVILS PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH IN THE ACC...
Following a vote of the ACC women's soccer head coaches, Duke junior defender
Delaney Graham was tabbed one of 11 preseason All-ACC selections, while the Blue Devils were picked No. 4 in the ACC preseason poll.
Graham, a 2019 All-ACC Second Team selection, was one of four defenders receiving honors
Other preseason All-ACC defenders were Malia Berkely (Florida State), Maycee Bell (North Carolina) and Emily Fox (North Carolina). In the midfield, Jaelin Howell (Florida State), Yujie Zhao (Florida State), Emina Ekic (Louisville), Brianna Pinto (North Carolina) and Alexa Spaanstra (Virginia) were selected, while Diana Ordonez (Virginia) was the lone forward. Louisville's Gabby Kouzelos was tabbed for goalkeeper.
A native of Atlanta, Ga., Graham was a 2019 United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Third Team selection, after starting all 20 contests for the Blue Devils. She helped the Blue Devils register eight team shutouts a year ago. Graham collected four assists on the year.
North Carolina received eight first place votes and 129 points and is the preseason favorite in the ACC. Florida State earned three first place votes and 123 points and Virginia had two first place votes and 113 points, while Duke had 98 points to round out the top four teams. Clemson (86), Notre Dame (79), Louisville (77), Virginia Tech (64), Wake Forest (50), Pitt (42), Boston College (35), Miami (27) and Syracuse (13) rounded out the league preseason poll.
MARQUEE FRESHMAN CLASS FOR THE BLUE DEVILS...
Duke welcomes one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, as six new faces comprise the Blue Devils' No. 5 nationally ranked class, including
Grace Watkins,
Olivia Migli,
Emily Royson,
Nicole Chico,
Maggie Graham and
Katie Groff. This is the ninth-straight year that the Blue Devils have reeled in a top 10 recruiting class.
CHURCH ENTERS 20TH YEAR AS THE BLUE DEVIL BOSS...
Robbie Church is looking to build off another impressive season in Durham as he begins his 20th season at the helm of Duke women's soccer. The 2017 ACC Coach of the Year and leader of the 2017 United Soccer Coaches National Staff of the Year will look to lead Duke to its 26th NCAA Tournament appearance in 2020.
ACC NETWORK...
Five games for the fall of 2020 were picked up by the ACC Network -- Sept. 17 vs. Virginia, Sept. 20 vs. Wake Forest, Sept. 27 vs. North Carolina, Oct. 4 vs. Clemson and Nov. 1 vs. Miami.
NO FANS IN KOSKINEN STADIUM...
As previously announced, Duke will begin the fall sports seasons with no fans in attendance at Koskinen Stadium. All dates, opponents and times are subject to change. Changes will be posted on Duke women's soccer social accounts and GoDuke.com.
