PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C.— Boosted by a final round of four-under-par, 67, Duke University sophomore
Erica Shepherd placed third overall at the Golfweek Caledonia Amateur, which was being played at the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island, S.C.
A native of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd posted rounds of 71, 68 and 67 over three days to finish with a seven-under-par, 206. She concluded the event one shot behind Emily Mahar, who won in a playoff over Caroline Curtis.
Shepherd turned in four birdies on the back nine to move up the leaderboard on the afternoon. She opened the day with two pars and a bogey on No. 3. Shepherd then played her final 15 holes at five-under-par to finish with a 67. She collected birdies on No. 6, No. 11, No. 12, No. 15 and No. 16.
"It was really exciting to play some tournament golf again," said Shepherd. "The past month, I've worked a lot on putting. So, it felt nice to roll the ball well and see a lot of puts fall. The five birdies today were a combination of sticking wedges close and making some 20-foot birdie putts."
After carding rounds of 69 and 70 the first two days, sophomore
Megan Furtney signed for a 72 Tuesday on her way to finishing in a tie for seventh with a two-under-par, 211. She carded three birdies over her final 11 holes to finish strong.
Duke rookie
Anne Chen posted her first under-par round of the week to close the tournament with a one-under, 70, and finish in a tie for 11th with an even-par, 213. Chen, who is from Sugar Land, Texas, was one-over-par through her first eight holes Tuesday, but collected back-to-back birdies on No. 9 and No. 10 to get to one-under. She closed with six pars, one birdie and one bogey to finish in the red.
Fellow freshman
Phoebe Brinker closed the event in a tie for 14th with a two-over-par, 215, after notching rounds of 72, 69 and 74. A product of Wilmington, Del, Brinker birdied her first hole of the day and also registered an eagle on the par five eighth Tuesday.
