PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C.— The Duke women's golf duo of
Megan Furtney and
Erica Shepherd head into the final round of the Golfweek Caledonia Amateur in a tie for sixth place and only three shots off the individual lead at the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island, S.C.
A native of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd carded a three-under-par, 68, Monday as she collected five birdies. She owns a 36-hole ledger of three-under-par, 139, with rounds of 71 and 68. Shepherd posted birdies on No. 4 and No. 8 on the front nine on her way to making the turn at two-under-par, 33. On the back, she rolled in three birdies over a span of four holes on No. 13, No. 15 and No. 16 to get to five-under-par for the day. Shepherd closed with back-to-back bogeys on No. 17 and No. 18 to finish with a 68. Â
After totaling a 69 in round one, Furtney signed for a one-under, 70, Monday and is tied for sixth along with Shepherd at three-under-par. She opened the day with seven straight pars, before moving to one-under-par with a birdie on No. 8. Furtney, who is from St. Charles, Ill., bogeyed the ninth as she made the turn at even par. She collected three birdies over a span of five holes on the back nine on her way to finishing with a one-under, 35, to close the day. Smith Knaffle carded an individual best five-under-par, 66, to jump up the leaderboard Monday. She leads by one shot with a six-under-par, 136. Â
Along with Furtney and Shepherd in the top 10 is Blue Devil rookie
Phoebe Brinker as she is tied for eighth with a one-under-par, 141. Brinker, a product of Wilmington, Del., featured back-to-back birdies on holes No. 4 and No. 5 early to get to two-under-par, which is where she would finish the day. She played the final 13 holes at even par to sign for a 69. Â
Freshman
Anne Chen enters the final day in the top 16 with rounds of 71 and 72 for a one-over-par, 143. Chen posted 11 pars and two bogeys over her first 13 holes Monday, but registered a birdie on the 363-yard, par four 14th to get back to one-over for the day. Chen, who is from Sugar Land, Texas, finished the day with four pars to shoot a 72. Â
In the final round, Brinker will get things started at 8:03 a.m., while Shepherd and Chen will play together at 8:30 a.m., followed by Furtney at 8:57 a.m.
