PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C.— Duke University women's golf sophomore
Megan Furtney carded a two-under-par, 69, Sunday to open action at the Golfweek Caledonia Amateur, which is being contested at the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island, S.C.
Furtney, who hails from St. Charles, Ill., registered four birdies on the day on her way to posting a two-under-par ledger and is only two shots off the individual lead with 36 holes remaining. She collected a birdie on the par-five second hole and would make the turn at even-par, 35. Furtney then got hot notching birdies on No. 10, No. 12 and No. 16, before closing with a bogey on No. 18 to finish with a 69, which was tied for second.
Lauren Hartlage carded a four-under-par, 67, in round one to hold the individual lead.
Both freshman
Anne Chen and sophomore
Erica Shepherd notched even par rounds of 71 on Sunday and are tied for ninth.
A product of Sugar Land, Texas, Chen registered back-to-back birdies on No. 3 and No. 4 to get to two-under-par early in her round. She finished her day with 12 pars and two bogeys to close with a 71.
Shepherd, who is from Greenwood, Ind., opened with bogeys on No. 2 and No. 5 and was two-over-par early. She then rolled in birdies on No. 6, No. 9 and No. 10 to get in the red at one-under-par. Shepherd moved to two-under with her fourth birdie on the par five 15th. She closed with a double-bogey on No. 18 to finish with a 71.
Rookie
Phoebe Brinker signed for a one-over-par, 72, in round one. She opened the day with a bogey on No. 1 and would go on to play the next 17 holes at even par with two birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars. A native of Wilmington, Del., Brinker is tied for 17th overall after day one.
The ACC cancelled team competition among the 12 ACC women's golf squads on July 29, 2020 because of health concerns surrounding COVID-19. The ACC is allowing student-athletes, who are competing in golf, to remain eligible to compete unattached and they are allowed continue to practice at their school's discretion.
Earlier this fall, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced the launch of the GCAA Amateur Series powered by Golfstat, which is a series of amateur tournaments to be played from August through November of 2020. The tournaments will be two-day events that will be played across the country and are eligible to men's and women's collegiate golfers who were on a varsity roster in 2019-20 or are scheduled to be on a varsity roster this coming fall.
In round two, Brinker will open action at 8:03 a.m., while Chen and Shepherd will tee off together at 8:30 a.m., and Furtney will go off at 8:57 a.m.
