DURHAM, N.C. – Duke football opened its 2020 preseason camp Friday morning with its first official practice at the Brooks Practice Facility.
Â
Head coach David Cutcliffe, who begins his 13th year at the helm of the Blue Devil program, as well as redshirt senior center Jack Wohlabaugh and senior safety Michael Carter II met with the media virtually at the conclusion of practice.
Â
"This is the most fun that I've had since March, trust me," Cutcliffe said laughing. "A lot of spirit on our field today, starting with just the stretch to begin with. I thought our habits looked good. We did not go very long. We're wanting to gauge where we are. You worry about soft tissue injuries, meaning muscle pulls and strains. We're going to measure the needle and start moving the needle, we've got time. We're 36 days out before we're going to play a game. So we're not worried about a game. We're focused on Duke. I thought lot of spirit on defense. Lot of spirit on offense. I loved our kicking game work today. And so we've got a lot of young players with some very good veteran players on this team. The energy was absolutely outstanding."
Â
Wohlabaugh will look to anchor the Duke offensive line in front of a new starting quarterback after the departure of Quentin Harris last season. The Honorable Mention All-ACC selection just a year ago shared his thoughts with the media on how he felt the first day went.
Â
"Practice today felt pretty smooth," Wohlabaugh commented. "We've been distanced and trying to follow guidelines. We had shields on our facemasks, but everything felt pretty normal besides that."
Carter II, like Wohlabaugh, has been a key player for Duke at his positive over the last couple years. In 2019 he finished fifth on the team with 53 tackles, including 30 solo stops. The safety added his thoughts about finally getting back on the field together.
Â
"It felt really good to be back," Carter II said. "It felt like a breath of fresh air almost, just being together again on the field. We definitely missed that aspect of football a lot. We've been looking forward to this day for a long time. Of course, we had to follow the COVID-19 guidelines for practice and social distancing and everything like that but we still had a fun practice and we're glad to be back."

The Blue Devils' amended 2020 schedule has them scheduled to kick off their season on the road at Notre Dame on Sept. 12.Â
