DURHAM, N.C. –Following two weeks of training, the Duke men's soccer team took to Koskinen Stadium for the first time in 2020 with a 90-minute intrasquad scrimmage. In an even battle between Blue and White, it was a late goal from
Scotty Taylor that made the difference in a 3-2 victory for Blue.
White had the better of possession in the early going as Blue sought to find its rhythm. Blue, settling down after the excitement of playing a full scrimmage for the first time, started to gain confidence and earned back-to-back corner kicks in the 15th minute.
Krew Verratti had the first shot of the evening, but it sailed well over the bar.
After Blue had the better of play for about 10 minutes, White regained its composure as the majority of play came in the middle third of the field from both sides.
Both teams spent much of the first 30 minutes trying to find the open space in the final third as the two teams headed into the first break knotted at zero.
In the early going of the second period, Blue capitalized off a bad pass from White to earn a corner kick. White put the initial ball away from goal, but right to the feet of
Nick Pariano who sent it back in to the top of the six-yard box where
Lewis McGarvey sent a header just over the bar.
Blue continued to put the pressure on and in the 12th minute of the period,
Tino Lopez made a fantastic individual run out of the back and earned a foul 22 yards from goal.
Pariano confidently stepped behind the ball and struck a low driven shot through the wall and into the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead. Just minutes later it was rookie
Peter Stroud getting in on the scoring, firing his shot inside the near post from the left side of the penalty box.
Blue, holding a 2-0 lead, was confident and played as such in attacking without abandon and refusing to let White find anything in its offensive third.
After weathering a storm of pressure from Blue, White settled in and got back into the game with a fabulous strike from
Nico Macri from 18 yards. With the ball at his feet, Macri took one cut back and hit a left-footed shot into the right corner of the goal to make it 2-1 after 60 minutes of action.
Just minutes into the final period,
Conor Kelly equalized for White after getting in behind the defense and doing well to finish to the far post.
After a frantic pace in the first 60 minutes, both squads started to feel the two weeks of training and play slowed.
As the game entered into the 80th minute, Taylor put Blue ahead again. Pariano found Taylor just outside the 18-yard box. With a little bit of time, the sophomore striker looked up finished the chance past a diving
JT Harms for the winner.
Duke heads back to the practice field next week, its third full week of action.
