DURHAM, N.C. – Even though their season was cancelled for the fall of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, five of the six members of the 2020-21 Duke women's golf program have returned to campus.
Sophomore
Megan Furtney, sophomore
Erica Shepherd, freshman
Phoebe Brinker and freshman
Anne Chen arrived in Durham last week ahead of classes kicking off Monday, Aug. 17. Junior
Gina Kim competed in the South Carolina Women's Open this past weekend and returned to campus for COVID-19 screening Tuesday, as she opens classes this week.
"Duke has done a great job making sure all students have the opportunity to return to campus safely," commented Furtney. "Although the fall season is going to be different this year, being able to be back in class and training with the team again feels amazing. We are all ready to work together to make the most out of this semester. I truly believe we can make this fall just as successful as any other semester. I can't wait to get things started with the team!"
Senior
Jaravee Boonchant decided to remain in Bangkok, Thailand for the fall and is expected to return to campus for the 2021 spring semester.
The Blue Devils will open weight room workouts this week and are developing a practice schedule for the fall to best challenge the squad. Team members will be able to play in individual tournaments, but the coaching staff cannot arrange any events as a group with other schools.
Duke had its 2019-20 campaign cut short in March due to the pandemic, after turning in one of its best performances of the year by winning the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge against a stellar field. The Blue Devils lost graduating senior
Ana Belac, but will return four starters for the 2020-21 campaign.
Head coach
Dan Brooks guided the Blue Devils to their seventh NCAA Championship in 2019 and enters his 37th season at Duke.
"I'm so excited to be back with the team after not being able to see them for months now," said Kim. "Although we don't have a fall season, I am confident that our team will use this time wisely to practice and train well for the spring semester."
