DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women's lacrosse head coach
Kerstin Kimel is excited to announce the roster for the 2020-21 academic year.
This year's squad features 33 returners and seven newcomers to total 40 student-athletes. Duke's returners account for all starts in the shortened 2020 season, 96.4 percent of the total points scored, 96.5 percent of the ground balls, 97.3 percent of the caused turnovers and 100 percent of its draw controls.
The seven newcomers feature six freshmen –
Jane Charlton,
Katie DeSimone,
Katie Keller,
Izzy Marsh,
Maddie McCorkle and
Julia Schwasnick. The group was tabbed the 14th
-ranked class in the country by Inside Lacrosse's recruiting database, led by DeSimone's No. 5 ranking. Much like last season's Blue Devils, all six incoming freshmen saw their senior high school season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We are excited to finally welcome the Class of 2024 to campus this week," Kimel said. "These six young women are poised to make a tremendous and immediate impact on our program. They are highly skilled, seasoned and competitive on the lacrosse field, where they have led their respective high school teams to league, regional and state championships. Each are also incredibly talented and hard-working students who will make the most of their opportunities to learn and grow both in the classroom and through other academic endeavors offered at Duke."
Three of Duke's student-athletes on the 2020-21 roster took advantage of the eligibility relief granted by the NCAA after the cancelation of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Callie Humphrey and
Catherine Cordrey will both be returning to Durham for each of their fifth season in Duke blue, while
Gabby Rosenzweig will join the Blue Devils for the first time after transferring from Penn this summer.
"We could not be more proud to welcome each of them and their families into our Duke lacrosse family and the greater Duke Athletics and university community," Kimel continued.
Meet the newcomers:
Gabby Rosenzweig
Graduate Student – Attack – Somers, N.Y. – Pennsylvania
After the 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19 and the NCAA granted eligibility relief to all players, Rosenzweig began looking for options and found her match at Duke. The two-time Tewaaraton Award nominee and three-time All-American will join the potent Duke attack for the 2021 season. At Penn, Rosenzweig set the school record in career points scored (247), single-season points (98) and single-season assists (63). She is enrolled in Duke's Fuqua School of Business Master of Management Studies Program.
Jane Charlton
Freshman – Defense – New Canaan, Conn. – New Canaan
Charlton enjoyed a stellar career at New Canaan, earning All-American honors as a junior in 2019. Throughout her three-season career, she tallied 67 goals, 23 assists, 96 draw controls, 86 caused turnovers and 62 ground balls. Charlton earned First Team All-State recognition as New Canaan won the Connecticut Class L State Championship in 2018. In addition to Lacrosse, Charlton also competed on the varsity cross country and basketball teams at New Canaan, captaining both teams during her senior year.
Katie DeSimone
Freshman – Attack – Bay Shore, N.Y. – St. Anthony's
DeSimone comes to Durham as the fifth-ranked recruit in the country after a standout career at St. Anthony's. She amassed 139 goals and 45 assists in the attack throughout her three seasons. DeSimone earned All-America honors as a sophomore and was named the to the USA Today All U.S.A. Lacrosse Team, the New York State First Team and the CHSAA Player of the Year as a junior. In addition to her high school success, DeSimone played in the Under Armour All-American Game all three years, winning the championship in 2017 and 2018. She was named to the All-Tournament Team in 2018. DiSimone also trained with the USA U-19 team in 2018 and 2019. In addition to lacrosse, DeSimone competed in varsity tennis all four years and won the state championship her senior season.
Katie Keller
Freshman – Midfield – Rye, N.Y. – Sacred Heart Greenwich
Keller joins the Blue Devils in the midfield after graduating from Sacred Heart Greenwich. In just three seasons, she totaled 154 goals, 61 assists, 60 draw controls, 63 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. Her most recent season was her best season to date, recording 63 goals and 34 assists on her way to All-New England and All-FAA honors as a junior. In addition, Keller also competed at the Under Armour All-American Games as a sophomore and junior and earned a spot in the Under Armour 150 All Stars. In addition to her success on the field, Keller excelled in the studio placing third place for her art portfolio in the Stamford Art Association Exhibition and had a piece selected for the highly competitive Bruce Museum iCreate Student Exhibition.
Izzy Marsh
Freshman – Attack – Reisterstown, Md. – McDonogh
Marsh comes to Durham as the 64th-ranked recruit in the class of 2020 by Inside Lacrosse. She was a three-season standout at McDonogh High School and was set to be captain of her senior team prior to the season cancelation. Marsh received the 2020 Howard C. Eyth Scholar Athlete Award for her efforts on the field and in the classroom. Although missing time with an injury during the season, she tallied 31 points as a junior to help lead the squad to be IAAM A Conference Champions. Apart from McDonogh, Marsh was a lifetime player on M&D 2020 Black, one of the top club teams in the country. She played in the 2017 and 2019 Under Armour All-America Game, winning the tournament in 2019. In addition to lacrosse, Marsh also played field hockey at McDonogh was named all-conference as a senior.
Maddie McCorkle
Freshman – Midfield – Hanover, N.H. – Hanover
McCorkle was a three-time first team All-State selection and All-American during her career at Hanover High School. She totaled 184 goals and 33 assists in three seasons, including 63 goals and seven assists as a junior. McCorkle was named the Valley News Athlete of the Year as a junior as well. She was also selected to the New Hampshire/Vermont First Team for the National Tournament as a sophomore and junior. In addition to lacrosse, McCorkle also played four seasons of varsity basketball, earning All-State honors in three seasons. She capped off her basketball career scoring 1,000 points and being named the New Hampshire Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.
Julia Schwasnick
Freshman – Midfield – Oceanside, N.Y. – Oceanside
Schwasnick earned recognition as one of the Top-100 players on Long Island as a junior and a senior. After missing the majority of the 2019 season due to injury, Schwasnick was set to captain the 2020 team before the cancelation of the season. She earned All-County honors as a sophomore after scoring 24 goals and dishing nine assists during the season. On the club scene, she played for Long Island Liberty Lacrosse and won the US Lacrosse Women's National Tournament. Apart from lacrosse, Schwasnick also played varsity volleyball as a junior and senior.
