DURHAM, N.C. – Despite international travel for The Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement Program (ACE) being canceled for the summer of 2020, the ACE Program has multiple past participants who continue to demonstrate the values ACE taught them as part of being an ACE Ambassador. This week, we highlight
Meible Chi.
In February 2014, Duke's Board of Trustee's, chaired by Duke alumnus David Rubenstein, traveled to Palo Alto, Calif., and met with officials from Stanford to determine opportunities for collaboration between the two institutions. The challenging schedules of student-athletes, which make participating in off-campus activities such as study abroad programs difficult, was identified as an issue the two universities could work together on in order to develop a solution, leading to the genesis of ACE. The ACE program was officially announced in Spring 2015.
Recent Duke graduate and member of the women's tennis team, Chi traveled to China in 2018 with the ACE Program.
"I decided to stay involved with the ACE program because I believe that it is the catalyst for any of my future volunteering efforts," Chi said. "I've always wanted to give back, and ACE has shown me ways to make it happen."
Chi's past experiences with service include teaching tennis at a local elementary school and hosting free tennis clinics with her teammates. In addition to offering tennis lessons, Chi and some of her teammates have volunteered at multiple Duke bone marrow drives, informing potential donors about the benefits of donating and becoming a potential bone marrow donor candidate. She is also a member of Duke's Collegiate Athlete Pre-Medical Experience Program (CAPE).
With a major in evolutionary anthropology and minors in biology and chemistry, Chi is pursuing a career in the medical field. Having grown up with a Chinese heritage, she felt that the ACE in China program was a wonderful opportunity to fully immerse herself into a culture that is part of her identity. The program allowed her to continue building her leadership, collaborative, and interpersonal skills. The friends, memories, and lessons that she has made throughout this program will continue to inspire her to seek other opportunities for civic engagement.
