FRANKFORT, Ill. – With back-to-back rounds of one-under-par, 71, Duke University women's golf rising sophomore
Erica Shepherd placed tied for fourth in stroke play qualifying at the Women's Western Amateur Championship, which was played at Prestwick Country Club in Frankfort, Ill.
Shepherd advanced to match play, which kids off Thursday morning with the round of 32. Â
A native of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd had a slow start Wednesday to open her round with three bogeys over her first six holes. She regrouped and rolled in birdies on No. 7, No. 8 and No. 10 to move to one-under-par. Shepherd closed the day at even par over her final eight holes, which included four pars, two birdies on No. 14 and No. 18 and two bogeys. She hit 11 fairways, 14 greens and had 30 putts in the afternoon.
Over the two days, Shepherd carded 10 birdies and finished with a two-under-par, 142, only two shots off the co-medalists. Caroline Curtis and Blair Stockett tied for medalist honors with a four-under-par, 140. Â
On Thursday, the round of 32 and 16 of match play will take place, followed by the quarterfinals and semifinals on Friday. The championship match will take place Saturday, July 25. Â
The Duke incoming freshmen tandem of
Phoebe Brinker and
Anne Chen also concluded action in the first annual American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Senior Cup. Brinker collected a 2&1 victory over Taylor Roberts in singles action Wednesday, while Chen dropped a 4&3 ledger to Nick Gabrelick. Â
Brinker and Roberts helped raise over $40,000 to benefit the Emergency Golf Relief Fund and the AJGA's Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant. Â
