DURHAM, N.C. – Playing in his first season as a Blue Devil since transferring,
Edu Güell posted a 19-5 overall singles record while going 8-2 in dual action before the spring season was cut short due to COVID-19. Güell went 6-4 in doubles action during his junior year in 2019-20.
In the fall, Güell claimed his first collegiate title after going 4-0 in singles at Duke's James Bonk Invitational. He was also a singles quarterfinalist at the ITA Carolina Regional.
During the spring season, Güell mostly played on courts two and three as he was 3-0 when playing at No. 3 singles. A few of his biggest wins of the spring came against Illinois' No. 61 Zeke Clark, Kentucky's Cesar Bourgois and Wake Forest's Henri Squire.
Güell was named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the second consecutive year.

What was your favorite memory from this season?
"Clinching against Kentucky. That was the match after our first loss against Tennessee and I wasn't haven't good feelings about it. I lost my first set easy, but somehow, I was able to come back in the second and ended up winning the third playing really good tennis. It was a great relief."
As a transfer, did a specific teammate help you adjust to both campus and being on the team?
"Yes – Samir [Agadi] has been a great teammate since day one and has become one of my best friends here at Duke."
How have you been spending your time since the season was cut short?
"I've been spending my time mainly on schoolwork, tennis and preparing for internship interviews. I've been pretty busy until a couple of weeks when school finished, and I was already able to get an internship for next summer. Now, I'm investing a lot of time on getting fit and doing other things that I don't have time to do during the season such as watching movies, tv shows or reading books."
Who is your favorite all-time tennis player and why?
"Rafa Nadal. He's the best athlete that Spain has ever had. I believe that he has been the most impressive tennis player of all time because of the difficulty of things he has done. He's won 12 times Roland Garros, which means he has been the best player on clay court for 12 years! Moreover, he has been able to beat [Roger] Federer in Wimbledon at his favorite surface, which it didn't happen the other way around in clay…and many more. I've already had the opportunity to meet him personally, spend time with him and I admire him as a person as well."
If you could go to one major tournament, which one would it be and why?
"I've been lucky enough to go to all Grand Slams and I've actually played them in the Junior Circuit. I'd choose Wimbledon; the tradition, place and atmosphere makes it a unique tournament."
What do you look forward to most next year?
"All I am asking right now is to be able to come back to normality and to compete. Beyond that, I'd like to continue building upon what we were building this year and were about to achieve before the season got canceled. I think we are in the right direction, but there's still room for improvement."
