DURHAM, N.C. – Recent Duke men's golf graduate
Chandler Eaton has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) 2020 Academic All-America Men's At-Large Team Second Team, as announced by the organization Friday.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes in the following men's sports -- fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo, wrestling -- for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom. Honorees were selected from those that were named first-team Academic All-District.
Eaton joined fellow Blue Devils
Eoin Gronningsater (fencing) and
Nathaniel Hernandez (swimming & diving), who were also named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. Duke and Stanford were the only colleges with three men's honorees.
Jaravee Boonchant (women's golf), earned a spot on the women's Academic All-America Team.
A two-time All-America selection, Eaton left his mark on the Duke program with the third-lowest career scoring average (71.59). The Alpharetta, Ga., native sits tied for No. 2 on Duke's career list for rounds in the 60s (35), ranked second in career rounds of par or better (71), tied for eighth in career top-5 finishes (nine) and 10th in career top-10 finishes (14). He was one of just four players nationally to finish in the top 15 in the NCAA Championships in 2018 and 2019, joining Oklahoma State's Matthew Wolff and Viktor Hovland and Stanford's Isaiah Salinda.
Eaton, who was one of just four amateurs to make the cut at the 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach and finished tied for 58th, is the third Duke men's golfer all-time to make the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team, joining
Todd Anderson in 1985 and
Brinson Paolini in 2013.
Eaton holds a Duke degree in Environmental Science & Policy.
