DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women's lacrosse head coach
Kerstin Kimel announced Wednesday the addition of
Gabby Rosenzweig to the 2020-21 roster.
After a storied lacrosse career at Pennsylvania, Rosenzweig has decided to use the eligibility relief granted by the NCAA to enroll at Duke University and join the Blue Devils for the upcoming season.
"On behalf of our players and coaches, we could not be more excited to welcome Gabby and the Rosenzweig's to our program and greater Duke Lacrosse family," Kimel said. "As one of the most consistent and outstanding players in the Ivy League over the last three years, Gabby will add another dimension of scoring and playmaking to our already deep and prolific offensive unit for 2021."
Rosenzweig leaves the Penn program as one of the greatest attackers in program history. The Somers, N.Y., native is the program's all-time leading scorer with 247 career points.
Penn played just five games before the cancellation of the 2020 season, but in that short period of time Rosenzweig scored 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points. She was named to the 2020 Tewaaraton Watch List and the 2020 Inside Lacrosse Media Honorable Mention All-America Team.
As a junior, Rosenzweig was a Tewaaraton Award nominee, IWLCA Third Team All-American, Inside Lacrosse Third Team All-American, IWLCA First Team All-Region member and a unanimous selection to the First Team All-Ivy League. She started all 18 contests and set the Quakers single-season record for total points (98) and assists (63). Her 98 points ranked third in Ivy League history and were the most since 1983. Rosenzweig ranked seventh nationally in both points per game and assists per game, averaging 5.4 and 3.5, respectively.
Rosenzweig was a Tewaaraton Award nominee, IWLCA Third Team All-American, Inside Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-American, IWLCA First Team All-Region and First Team All-Ivy as a sophomore. She tied the Penn program record for points in a single season with 85. Her 49 goals were second on the team and fourth for an individual season on the Quakers' all-time list. Rosenzweig also added 36 assists, leading the team and conference. Those 36 assists were third all-time at Penn for a single season.
In her first season in Philadelphia, Rosenzweig was second among Ivy League freshmen in scoring with 42 points but led the class in assists with 16. She tied for third on the team in overall scoring and was fourth in goals scored (26). Rosenzweig earned ILWomen.com National Rookie of the Week honors after amassing four goals and three assists against Yale that season.
"Additionally, Gabby was a demonstrated leader on and off the field throughout her career at Penn," Kimel said. "She has already done an outstanding job of reaching out to establish relationships with her new teammates and I expect that she will step up into a leadership role here at Duke as well."
Rosenzweig has enrolled at Duke's Fuqua School of Business.
"I chose Duke because of the opportunity to continue my education in a very impactful way while also getting another year to do what I love in a way that aligns with my values and goals," Rosenzweig said. "From the start I could tell that the program highly values teamwork, leadership and work ethic in a similar way to how we did at Penn."
Rosenzweig will join a Blue Devil attack that scored 17.67 goals per game throughout 2020, ranking fifth nationally. Duke was also the only team in the ACC that boasted eight student-athletes with 10+ goals scored.
"I'm pumped to join a versatile attack," Rosenzweig continued. "Anyone can score on Duke's offense and I can't wait to be a part of it. I know I am going to grow so much as a player based on the new skills and moves I have learned from [Duke assistant coach]
Brooke Griffin from afar. Duke has big goals for next year and I am looking forward to being part of reaching them."
