DURHAM, N.C. – After weeks of revealing its top moments of the 2020 season, Duke softball announces the best moment of year with the program's first win against a ranked opponent.
MOMENT NO. 1 | DOWN GOES NO. 4 TEXAS
With a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, No. 4 Texas had a runner on first with two outs. The Longhorn runner attempted to steal for second, but redshirt junior
Jazmine Moreno gunned her down for the final out of the contest. Duke's shutout victory was the program's first win against a ranked opponent while Texas was handed its first loss of the 2020 season.
Two of the Blue Devils' three hits came in the fourth frame, beginning with a leadoff double to right center from senior
Raine Wilson. In the next at-bat, Wilson was able to advance a base on a dropped third strike. Stepping up to the plate, sophomore
Caroline Jacobsen singled to bring in the game-winning run (1-0).
Peyton St. George was a force in the circle, hurling seven complete innings while picking up one strikeout.
JAZZ'S REFLECTION
"As soon as I saw the runner going to second out of the corner of my eye, I just knew we were going to get her. It was a huge win for us, and we knew that it was a testament to all the hard work we have been putting into this program. We just knew we were going to shock the world this season and we did."
CAROLINE'S REFLECTION
"Being a part of Duke's first win against a ranked opponent is exactly what we all came to Duke for. We were able to be in a big moment, as what others would see, as the underdogs. I don't think my heart has ever beat that fast in a softball game than in the bottom of the seventh in Texas."
PEYTON'S REFLECTION
"I have a love/hate relationship with this game sometimes. I love it, because it shows the world what Duke softball is capable of and how competitive we are until the very last out. But I also hate it because many people will look back on this game as the 'highlight' of our season – maybe even the last three years. This would not have just been a season highlight, but it would've been the start to our very long road that ends deep in the NCAA Tournament. A win against a top five team was what we needed to fire us up, but there were many more highlights to come."
