DURHAM, N.C. – Recent Duke fencing graduate
Eoin Gronningsater has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) 2020 Academic All-District® Men's At-Large Team, as announced by the organization Thursday.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom. Honorees selected First-Team Academic All-District® will advance to the Academic All-America® ballot and honorees for Division I will be announced June 19th.
One of 10 male student-athletes selected to the NCAA Division I All-District III team, Gronningsater was joined by fellow Blue Devils
Chandler Eaton,
Nathaniel Hernandez and
Jaravee Boonchant.
Gronningsater earns the accolade for the second straight year and marks the third consecutive year a Blue Devil fencer was selected an honoree.
Gronningsater left his mark on the Duke history books as one of the most successful fencers in program history.
A two-time captain and three-time All-American in foil, Gronningsater has seen both athletic and academic success throughout his four years as a Blue Devil. He was honored with a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship as well as a 2020 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship Award recipient from the Atlantic Coast Conference. He was also named the 2020 Duke Male Senior Student-Athlete of the Year and the 2020 ACC Men's Fencing Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
With an impressive 182-38 (.827) career record, Gronningsater qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of his four years. The NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional qualifier was named ACC Fencer of the Year in 2018 and the ACC Most Valuable Player for helping lead the Blue Devil men to their first ACC team title.
This season, Gronningsater also teamed with fellow captain
Lindsay Sapienza to create the 'Fence for the Fight' campaign in partnership with the Duke Cancer Institute in support of the Director of Administration/Recruiting for the fencing team,
Elizabeth Beguinet, in her fight against breast cancer.
With 1,215 program wins during the 2020 season in combination with pledging from donors, the 'Fence for the Fight' campaign totaled $30,144.55. The duo was honored by the ACC with the league's Top Six for Service Award.
Gronningsater graduated earlier in May with a 3.81 GPA with a degree in Political Science, a Psychology minor and an Innovation & Entrepreneurship certificate.
