The top-ranked Duke women's golf team set five new tournament records and saw its top four players all shoot under par as the Blue Devils claimed the 2001 Bryan National Collegiate championship with a new-tournament record 856 final score in Brown Summit, N.C.
Duke, which held a 10-stroke lead over tournament co-host No. 21 Wake Forest entering the final round, carded a blistering nine-under 279 in the third round, breaking the tournament record of 287. The Blue Devils' 23-stroke winning margin over Wake Forest (runner-up at 879) was also the largest in the four-year history of the Bryan National; with the previous widest being 13 by Washington in 1999.
Duke's 856 winning score broke its own tournament record of 894, set in 1998 when the Blue Devils won the inaugural tournament. They also claimed the top two spots on the leaderboard, as Candy Hannemann set a new-tournament record with a 209 54-hole score after shooting 68 in the final round today, while Virada Nirapathpongporn, tied with Hannemann after two rounds, took runner-up honors with a 212.
