Bryan National Collegiate
April 7, 2002
Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn birded the second hole of a sudden death playoff to take individual medalist honors and help the Blue Devils to their second straight Bryan National Collegiate title in women's college golf action in 2002 from Browns Summit, NC.
The second-ranked Duke squad fired a 290 in the third round for an 870 final score to win the team title for the third time in the five-year history of the Bryan National. Duke won the inaugural event in 1998 and set the tournament record with an 856 in the previous year's tournament. The Blue Devils also won their fourth consecutive tournament of the spring with the victory.
Nirapathpongporn tied with Georgia's Angela Jerman after three rounds at a five-under 211, forcing a sudden-death playoff. Both players parred the first hole and Nirapathpongporn converted a short birdie attempt while Jerman's five-foot putt lipped out.
Two players tied for third, four strokes out of first. Candy Hannemann of Duke and Ashley Lowery of Ohio State both shot 215 for the tournament.
Other Blue Devil results were sophomore Leigh Anne Hardin with a tied for 15th place finish after finishing with a 76 and freshman Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh recorded the third-best round of the day for the Blue Devils with a 73. A native of Lausanne, Switzerland, Aazam-Zanganeh rebounded on the weekend from a rocky start to finish tied for 32nd. Junior Kristina Engstrom had a 78 on Sunday to finish tied for 23rd.
