DURHAM, N.C. – After a shortened season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Duke softball finished at No. 25 in the final ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll of 2020, as announced by the organization on Tuesday morning. This is the first time in program history that Duke has been nationally ranked.
The Blue Devils were receiving votes in the poll since Feb. 18 while Duke finished right outside of the top 25 in the USA Today/NFCA D1 Top 25 Coaches Poll, picking up 49 votes. Duke was only the second school in the ACC to be selected in final ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll.
"Everyone in our program from players, coaches, support staff and administrators have worked extremely hard the last three years to be a top 25 team," said head coach
Marissa Young. "This is just the beginning for Duke softball. We will pick up where we left off last season and competing for championships will continue to be the standard for our program.
Duke compiled a 23-4 mark in 2020 and finished on nine-game win streak. The Blue Devils' 23 wins were the most in the ACC, including their first win over a ranked opponent as Duke defeated No. 4 Texas (1-0) in Austin on Feb. 22.
Among all Division I programs, the Blue Devils ranked ninth in win-loss percentage (.852), 10th in earned run average (1.61), 11th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.18), 14th in hit batters (4), 15th in doubles (44), 18th in scoring (6.59), 18th in slugging percentage (.528) and 20th in triples per game (.37). Duke finished the season 26th in batting average (.319) and 32nd for both stolen bases per game (1.70) and on base percentage (.404).
