ESPN Tabs Rumph II No. 2 Returning Edge Defender

DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt junior defensive end Chris Rumph II has been ranked the No. 2 returning edge defender in the country by ESPN.com.

Despite only playing 505 snaps last season, Rumph II posted the third-highest pass rush grade in the nation (92.9) among returning edge defenders en route to earning Sports Illustrated All-America honors.

Rumph finished 2019 with a pass rush win rate of 30.8 percent and a pressure rate of 25.7 percent, both of which were the best among edge defenders and nearly 2.5 percentage points higher than second place.

In Duke's regular season finale against Miami on Nov. 30, Rumph II finished the contest with a 95.2 overall grade via Pro Football Focus (PFF) and recorded 14 pressures on 31 pass rushes.

His 13.5 overall tackles for loss just a year ago finished sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Gainesville, Fla., native also led Duke with 11 quarterback hurries in 2019.

ESPN used a combination of Pro Football Focus grades and PFF's wins above average (WAA) metric to present the top 10 edge defenders returning to college football in 2020.
