Duke football play-by-play announcer David Shumate is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable football moments throughout his three years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.
"When the calendar turned to November in the fall of 2018, Duke was sitting at 5-3 and facing a daunting slate of four games that featured road trips to Miami and undefeated Clemson. A season that began 4-0 had seen injuries become an unfortunate recurring theme, with starters Daniel Jones, Mark Gilbert, Edgar Cerenord, Brittain Brown, and Ben Humphreys sidelined as well as several others missing significant time. As the Blue Devils boarded their flight headed for South Beach they did so off of consecutive losses, despite Deon Jackson setting a program record 403 all-purpose yards at Pittsburgh the week prior.
Â
"Duke had not won at Miami since 1976, and many thought an opportunistic Miami defense would largely set the tone in the game that was largely played in a tropical downpour. On the first play from scrimmage, Jackson changed everything. Knowing the Hurricanes would be aggressive, Jackson took a run that was designed to go to the right and opted to bounce it outside left – 75 yards and one timely Jake Bobo block later – the sophomore had set the tone for a historic night in South Florida.

"When the rain cleared Duke had indeed secured its first win at Miami in 42 years and Jackson was one of several heroes on the night. Humphreys, who was unable to go the previous week at Pittsburgh, recovered two second half fumbles, while senior tight end Daniel Helm had the go ahead score in the third quarter. The win also marked the Blue Devils sixth of the season, clinching a bowl berth for the sixth time in a seven-year stretch under head coach David Cutcliffe."
