DURHAM, N.C. – Keeping the countdown rolling along, Duke softball reveals the No. 5 top moment of the 2020 campaign.
MOMENT NO. 5 | BUTLER BREAKS PROGRAM STRIKEOUT RECORD
Junior
Brianna Butler was dealing in the circle, racking up 14 strikeouts to break the school record (13) against Gardner-Webb on Sunday, March 8. Butler had set a new career high in K's just a few days before with 10 against Fordham on March 6. Her career performance concluded with a seven-inning one hitter, resulting in her seventh win of the 2020 campaign.
The Blue Devils scored early in the contest, plating three runs on two hits in the first inning.
Caroline Jacobsen sent a two-run single to right center and
Rachel Crabtree hit a sacrifice fly to left to give Duke a 3-0 advantage. Gardner-Webb scored its lone run in the top of the fourth with a solo home run, but the Blue Devils tacked on one more tally in the bottom half of the frame for a final score of 4-1.
BRI'S REFLECTION
"The entire time I was in the circle, I was just focused on the communication between Raine [Wilson] and I. We both kept each other updated with what we thought the best pitches were for that specific situation and what pitches were on fire for me during that game. Other than Raine, the only things I could hear the entire game were my teammates behind me and in the dugout – especially the ones in the dugout. The dugout's constant energy and cheering helped me feel so confident during the entire game – so much that I nearly felt untouchable. Without them, I wouldn't have been able to throw that well. With their motivation in tow and the momentum I had built up with the first couple strikeouts, I could definitely feel that I was on a roll."
"I didn't realize it was a team record until the next day, but I thought it was pretty neat when I found out. However, I had two midterms to focus on so the excitement was pretty short lived!"
