Wednesday would have been the first round of the 2020 ACC Tournament for the 2019-20 Duke women's lacrosse team. Let's take a look back at last season's win over Notre Dame in the first round of the ACC Tournament in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Check out the original GoDuke.com release here.
Olivia Jenner's sixth goal proved to be the game winner and led the sixth-seeded Blue Devils over third-seed Notre Dame, 14-13, in a back-and-forth matchup during the quarterfinals of the 2019 ACC Tournament.
"I always smile when I initially think about that game, for some many reasons," Jenner said. "It was the culmination of a season's worth of effort and dedication from our entire team."
Duke, ranked 15
th at the time, entered the contest having lost to sixth-ranked Notre Dame, 15-7, in Durham just 10 days before. This game was different, and the Blue Devils were excited for another chance on the field with the Fighting Irish.
The Blue Devils took control early, taking a 3-1 lead with 17 minutes remaining by the way of a
Lindsey Reynolds score and a pair of goals from Jenner.
Notre Dame fired back later in the half, stringing together three goals in a three-minute span to take its first lead of the game, 6-5, with just over five minutes left in the half.
Duke responded by scoring two in the final minutes, including a goal to take the lead going into the break with one second remaining.
The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the second half before the Irish scored a pair to tie the game back up.
Katie Cronin recorded her second goal of the day to return the Duke lead, 9-8.
Notre Dame inevitably came back through a pair of scores and took the lead at 10-9 with 19 minutes left. Jenner and
Olivia Rubin led the Blue Devils with a trio of goals.
The drama intensified as the Irish responded again with a pair of goals to tie the teams at 12-12 with seven minutes remaining.
Duke scored two more, including Jenner's goal at the 4:10 mark that would ultimately be the game-winner. Notre pulled it back within one with 3:37 remaining and found the ball with a minute left. As the Irish were trying to clear the ball up the field, Jenner forced a turnover and gained possession for Duke to secure the win.
"Personally, that game had a tremendous amount of significance for me," Jenner continued. "I knew what the outcome would be if we didn't win, and I refused to allow our fate to be determined by not having a signature win. I just couldn't process that failure."
"My teammates and I played as if we didn't have anything to lose, and as any athlete knows, it is liberating to play without fear."
Then-junior goalkeeper
Gabbe Cadoux performed well in the Blue Devil's cage with nine stops and
Callie Humphrey led the defense with two caused turnovers.
Jenner combined with her sister,
Maddie Jenner, to collect 10 draw controls for the Blue Devils.
