DURHAM, N.C. – With the sudden end of the 2019-20 campaign, senior
Ana Belac was unable to close her Duke career the way she wanted and head back to the NCAA Championship to vie for a second straight title. Â
She has decided to make a dream come true and announced she is turning professional. Belac, who hails from Portoroz, Slovenia, will open her professional career on the Symetra Tour when action resumes. Â
"After my senior season was cut short, I have decided to officially turn professional and fulfill my childhood dream of becoming a professional athlete," said Belac. "I would like to thank everyone at Duke for giving me this unbelievable opportunity to grow, not only as a golfer but more importantly as a person. Without all the mentors and coaches I had the honor to be surrounded with during past four years, my growth and ultimately transitioning to my lifelong dream would not be possible. Thank you Duke."
Belac had collected a 71.85 stroke average in five events in the abbreviated 2019-20 season. She notched two top-five, three top-10 and four top-20 finishes on the year. She turned in her second collegiate victory at the East Lake Cup as she birdied five of her final seven holes on her way to logging a three-under-par, 69, to finish in a tie for first. Belac was selected as a finalist for the ANNIKA Award Watch List that will name the National Player of the Year.
In the final Golfweek individual rankings, Belac was the top-rated senior nationally and ranked No. 3 overall. The two-time All-America collected two rounds in the 60s and a total of eight even or under par rounds out of 13. In one of the top fields in the nation at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, Belac tied for fifth with rounds of 74, 66 and 70 for a three-under-par, 210. The tournament featured nine top 10 teams. Â
Belac helped lead Duke to the 2019 NCAA Championship as she went 3-0 in match play, while also being a part of the 2017 and 2018 ACC Championship teams. Â
She closed her Blue Devil career ranking tied seventh in even or under par rounds (49), seventh in stroke average (72.90), tied for fifth in rounds in the 60s (19), sixth in birdies (333) and tied for second in eagles (8). Belac turned in two wins, nine top five, 13 top 10 and 22 top 20 finishes over the four years. Â
In the fall, Belac earned full status on the Symetra Tour during LPGA Stage II qualifying. Â
