WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 24 Duke men's tennis dropped a 4-3 decision at No. 14 Wake Forest on Wednesday afternoon. The Demon Deacons clinched at 4-1, but the Blue Devils went on to win the final two singles matches.
With their second loss of the season, the Blue Devils moved to 12-2 overall and 1-1 in ACC play as the Demon Deacons improved to 10-3 and 1-0.
Starting with doubles action, Wake Forest's Bar Btozer and Rrezart Cungu defeated
Edu Güell and
Garret Johns, 6-2, on court three. The Demon Deacon's won the doubles point as No. 8
Sean Sculley and
Nick Stachowiak fell to No. 58 Henri Squire and Eduardo Nava on the top court (6-4).
Court one was first to finish in singles play as No. 38 Botzer topped No. 107 Stachowiak (6-0, 6-0) to go up 2-0. Guell garnered the first win for Duke, picking up a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Henri Squire on court two (2-1). Wake Forest followed with feats on courts four and six to secure the win.
Playing on, junior
Luca Keist battled for a three-set triumph (6-4, 2-6, 7-5) on court three against Taha Baadi. Court five featured two tiebreaks and a super tiebreaker before Johns walked away with his 11th win this spring (7-6[4], 6-7[5], 1-0 [7]).
The Blue Devils are back in action next week in Florida, playing matches at North Florida, Florida State and Miami. Duke's first match will be at UNF on Tuesday, March 10 at 3 p.m.
