Duke football play-by-play announcer David Shumateis giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable football moments throughout his three years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.
On a wet afternoon in late November I remember few gave the 2019 Duke football team a chance at ending its five-game losing streak against a Miami team that had won 12 of the previous 16 meetings between the two schools. Only once had Duke given up fewer than 38 points in its previous five games, but that week at practice you could sense as much from the underclassmen and the seniors that the final home game of the year was going to be different.Â

The quintessential example of a Duke football player during David Cutcliffe's tenure in Durham is Chris Rumph II, who is as mild-mannered and fun loving off the field, as he is ferocious on it. His familiar grin is a permanent fixture. Entering the final game of his redshirt sophomore season, he had six career sacks to his name, but after everything was said and done that Saturday night, he would add 3.5 more to that total.
Tre Hornbuckle,Dylan Singleton,Koby Quansah,Trevon McSwain,Ben Fryeand Shaka Heyward all chipped in on the "sack party" as the Blue Devils finished with 9.0 on the night. Those nine sacks against the Hurricanes were the most by a Blue Devil squad since 2000 when they first began tracking the stat. It also handed Duke consecutive wins over the Canes for the first time in program history.
