DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's lacrosse team was 6-3 overall and 1-1 in ACC play when spring sports were suspended due to COVID-19 concerns. The Blue Devils put together a promising first half of the season, being one of the top teams in the country in multiple statistical categories.
Duke's 2020 season featured multiple milestones, including head coach
Kerstin Kimel's and the programs 300th career wins versus Gardner-Webb and Virginia, respectively. Kimel's squad featured a balance attack, being the only ACC team to have eight double-digit goal scorers and one of two teams to have five players with seven or more caused turnovers.
Noting Duke:
Duke in the Polls:
Duke finished 18th in the final Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Poll of the season, announced after the cancellation of the 2020 season. In addition, Duke was 16th in the
Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and 19th in the
U.S. Lacrosse Magazine Poll.
Balanced Attack Up Top:
Duke was the only team in the ACC that had eight student-athletes with double-digit goals. In addition, 16 different Blue Devils scored this season.
The eight Duke players that had 10 or more goals this season were
Katie Cronin (22), Cat Barry (21),
Catherine Cordrey (17),
Maddie Jenner (16),
Caroline DeBellis (13),
Abby Landry (12),
Veronica Hineman (12) and
Anna Callahan (11).
On Pace for History:
Duke saw the 2020 season come to an abrupt end having only played nine of its 17 games this season. The Blue Devils were on pace for a strong year in multiple categories that would have challenged Duke all-time records.
On the offensive side, the Blue Devils finished with 159 goals, 65 assists and 224 points and won 170 draw controls in nine games. If the Blue Devils could have replicated their success in the back half of their season, Duke would have finished in the top five in school history in points, goals and assists. In addition, Duke was on pace to set the school record (307) in draw controls. Defensively, the Blue Devils were having one of its best years at causing turnovers in recent history. Duke caused 112 turnovers through nine games and, had the success continued, would have finished in the top-10 in program lore.
Cronin Nabs Multiple Honors:
Junior
Katie Cronin racked up multiple honors after she strung together three strong performances against Notre Dame, Virginia and East Carolina. She averaged four goals on just 6.5 shots a game versus conference opponents before scoring another five-point performance (four goals and an assist) against East Carolina.
After her two conference showings, Cronin was dubbed the ACC Offensive Player of the Week , the league announced on March 10. She was the first Duke player to receive the honor since March 13, 2018.
In addition to snatching conference honors, Cronin was named the Baltimore Sun's National Player of the Week on March 12. Cronin received the award after her two consecutive five-point performances against Virginia and East Carolina.
Jenner Dominates the Draw:
This season,
Maddie Jenner took the brunt of the draw controls and leads Duke in the category with 96 this season. Her 10.56 draw controls per game average finished second in the country.
With seven games remaining on the 2020 slate, Jenner's 96 draw controls place fifth all-time for an individual season in Duke history. She was easily on pace to challenge her sister Olivia's Duke record of 150 in a season, set last year. As a team, Duke finished the season first in the ACC and third nationally in draw controls per game, averaging 18.78 per contest.
