DURHAM, N.C. – Seven Duke fencers have received invitations to the 2020 NCAA Fencing Championship, as announced Tuesday by the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee. The championship is set for March 19-22 in Detroit, Mich.
2020 marks the 12th time head coach
Alex Beguinet has qualified five or more to the national stage.
The Blue Devils set to compete are
Danny Campbell III (epee),
Alex Gorman (saber),
Eoin Gronningsater (foil),
Ping Ping Kitsiriboon (saber),
Brycen Rushing (foil),
Zoe Superville (foil) and
Bowen Wang (epee).
The 2020 season marks Gronningsater's fourth time qualifying for NCAAs while Rushing will compete on the national stage for the third year. Gorman, Kitsiriboon and Superville return for the second consecutive season and will feature two newcomers in freshmen Campbell III and Wang.
Gronningsater and Kitsiriboon headlined the 2019 NCAA Championship as both garnered All-America accolades in their respective weapons with seventh and 11th-place finishes, respectively. Kitsiriboon collected the honor for the first time in his Duke career as Gronningsater became the first Blue Devil male foilist to capture back-to-back All-America accolades since Dorian Cohen in 2010-11.
This year, Gronningsater hopes to become the first Blue Devil male foilist to grab three All-America honors in his career while Kitsiriboon aims to garner the award as a saberist for the second time since Peter Truszkowski in 2006 and 2008.
Rushing looks to post his first top-12 finish of his Duke career after finishing 13th last year and 17th as a freshman. In Gorman and Superville's first appearances on the national stage last year, they notched 14th and 15th, respectively.
Superville will also look to become the first Blue Devil female to capture All-America honors in foil while Campbell III and Wang aims to become the first All-American in epee since 2017.
No Duke female saberist has grabbed All-America status since four-time All-American Becca Ward did so for the final time in 2012.
Over the weekend at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional in Durham, Superville and Rushing highlighted action with second and third-place finishes, respectively. Gronningsater (fourth), Gorman (fourth), Campbell (fourth), Wang (fifth) and Kitsiriboon (sixth) rounded out Duke's NCAA qualifier performances.
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
