DURHAM, N.C.—Duke's
Turner Uppgren turned in his best performance of the season between the pipes at Loyola Saturday and has in turn been selected as the ACC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week. The honor is the first for Uppgren this season and the third of his career.
Duke picks up the ACC Defensive Player of the Week award for the second consecutive week after
JT Giles-Harris garnered recognition last week.
Uppgren, a second-year starter, returned in net at No. 11 Loyola after not playing against Furman and was outstanding, making a season-high 15 saves. The native of Stillwater, Minn., made a save on his first shot faced on cage and rode that momentum over the four quarters in a 13-10 win over the Greyhounds.
In the first quarter, the graduate student goaltender made six stops in keeping Loyola off the scoreboard. He added three more in the second period and allowed just one goal in the opening 30 minutes.
He finished the game with 15 saves and three ground balls and allowed just five even strength goals as Loyola went 5-of-7 on man-up opportunities. The win was the 15th of his career and pushed his saves total to 243 for his career.
The Blue Devils climbed to No. 8 in the polls this week after the win over Loyola. Duke returns to action Tuesday night against Jacksonville at 6 p.m., on ESPNU.
