PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – Seeing action in her second collegiate tournament in the spring opener Sunday, Duke freshman
Megan Furtney paced the Blue Devils in round one at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. Cold and rainy weather forced a delay early during the front nine and three Blue Devil groups were not able to finish their day at the 6,017-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.
Furtney, a product of St. Charles, Ill., carded three birdies, including back-to-back on holes No. 15 and No. 16 on her way to finishing with an even-par, 71. She made the turn with a one-over, 36, as she rolled in a seven-foot birdie on the 475-yard, par five fifth. After turning in pars on eight consecutive holes, Furtney hit her 9-iron from 162 yards to 12 feet and rolled in the birdie. She then sank a five-footer for birdie on the par five 16th to move to one-under-par for the day. After a bogey on No. 17, she parred 18 to finish with her second collegiate even or under par ledger.
She is tied ninth overall as she hit 12 greens, 12-of-14 fairways and rolled 30 putts.

Wang, who is from Beijing, China, birdied her first hole and remained one-under-par through four holes. She went on to make the turn at one-over, 36, which included back-to-back birdies on No. 7 and No. 8.
Wang struggled to open the back nine, but regrouped and collected back-to-back birdies on No. 14 and No. 15 on her way to finishing with a 74.
