DURHAM, N.C. – Bouncing back from Friday night's loss, Duke men's tennis secure two victories on Sunday, defeating Kentucky (4-1) and blanking NC Central (7-0) in the Sheffield Tennis Center.
The Blue Devils finished the weekend at 2-1, improving to 9-1 overall. Kentucky, who was receiving votes in the latest Oracle/ITA rankings, fell to 7-4 while NC Central dropped to 0-5.
Match 1
Beginning with doubles play,
Spencer Furman and
Luca Keist blanked their Kentucky opponents, 6-0, on court two. The Wildcats answered, picking up a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles. For the third match in a row, the doubles decision played out on the top court as No. 6
Nick Stachowiak and
Sean Sculley edged Gabriel Diallo and Millen Hurrion in a tiebreaker (7-6 [2]).
Heading into singles with a 1-0 lead,
Garrett Johns was the first to finish with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court six, followed by Furman with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 52 Alexandre LeBlanc on court four. Kentucky's Diallo made it a 3-1 match with a win on three (6-4, 6-3) over Keist.
After falling short in the first set, sophomore
Edu Güell pulled away with a three-set victory (2-6, 6-3, 6-3) at No. 2 singles to clinch the match for the Blue Devils, winning 4-1.
Match 2
Carrying momentum from the earlier win, Duke cruised through doubles as Furman/Keist were first off with a 6-1 feat on court two. No. 6 Stachowiak/Sculley secured the doubles point once again, winning 6-3 on the top court over NC Central's Thanos Spyropoulos and Christos Dagklis.
Playing in his first match at No. 2 singles,
Samuel Rubell breezed past his opponent with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. No. 113
Andrew Zhang finished next on court five with a 6-2, 6-1 win before Johns secured Duke's victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court four.
Continuing action, Furman notched his first victory at No. 1 singles this season, taking down Spyropoulos with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Coming back after a 6-1 loss in the first set,
Samir Agadi garnered the first dual win as a Blue Devil in a super tiebreaker (1-6, 6-3, 1-0 [7]) on court six.
Omni Kumar closed out the match with his second with of the spring at No. 3 singles (6-3, 7-5).
The Blue Devils have a few weeks off before they return to competition on Friday, Feb. 28 against Virginia Tech. First serve versus the Hokies is set for 3 p.m.
