DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team returned to the court after nearly three weeks off from competition to defeat Virginia Tech, 4-2, Friday evening in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 10-1 overall and secure their first ACC win while the Hokies dip to 5-4 and 0-1 in the conference.
"We played good doubles today," head coach
Ramsey Smith said. "In singles, I thought there might have been some 'match rust'. We have been practicing well but it's been almost three weeks since we've competed. Virginia Tech played really well. They competed great and pushed us. It was great to see the guys respond to that adversity."
The Blue Devils captured the doubles point over the Hokies to give them the upper hand heading into singles.
On court two,
Luca Keist and
Spencer Furman collected their eighth win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Mitch Harper and Carlo Donato before fifth-ranked
Nick Stachowiak and
Sean Sculley concluded doubles action. With the 6-1 win over Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro on court one, the duo remains undefeated (7-0).
The Blue Devils dropped all first sets except two but continued to grind it out in singles action.
Rookie
Garrett Johns was first off the court for the Blue Devils with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Donato on court four. With the victory, Johns is now 8-1 this season and 1-0 in conference play.
No. 101
Andrew Zhang secured the third point for the Blue Devils on court six. Zhang defeated Chase Bernstine (6-3, 6-2) to elevate him to 5-1 in dual matches this season.
Virginia Tech bounced back with a pair of victories on courts five and two. Matthis Ross took down
Omni Kumar (6-4, 6-3) on court five before No. 81 Harper defeated Edu Güell (7-5, 6-4).
It was senior Stachowiak who clinched the match for the Blue Devils for their first ACC win this season. Ranked No. 105 by the ITA, Stachowiak outlasted No. 89 Korsgaard (2-6, 7-5, 6-4) on Duke's top court. With the win, Stachowiak improves to 6-1 in dual matches.
Duke will remain in Durham to host Coastal Carolina and Holy Cross Saturday. First serve against the Chanticleers is slated for 1 p.m., in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
