DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team continued its strong weekend of competition with two victories on Saturday, defeating Coastal Carolina (4-0) and Holy Cross (7-0) in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
With the wins, the Blue Devils improve to 12-1 overall in dual match play.
"Our guys did a good job being locked in from start to finish," head coach
Ramsey Smith said. "We have been very successful with our doubles points this season and the guys were ready to go in singles. They played with great energy and played really well."
Match 1 | Coastal Carolina
Beginning with doubles play,
Spencer Furman and
Luca Keist earned a 6-4 win over Coastal's Gonzalo Achondo and Pyry Hyrkonen on court two before
Edu Guell and
Garrett Johns secured the doubles point for the Blue Devils. The duo defeated Francesco Cori and Daiki Tanabe, 6-1, on court three to remain undefeated in doubles this dual match season.
The Blue Devils carried their momentum into singles as
Andrew Zhang,
Garrett Johns and
Nick Stachowiak all collected dubs on their respective courts.
Ranked No. 101 by the ITA, Zhang was first off with a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory over Juan Castellanos on court six before Johns down Tanabe 6-2, 6-2 on court four.
For the second match in a row, senior
Nick Stachowiak clinched for the Blue Devils. Tabbed No. 105 by the ITA, Stachowiak defeated Zak Talic (6-3, 6-2) on Duke's top court to secure Duke's 11th victory.
Match 2 | Holy Cross
Carrying momentum from the earlier win in the day, Duke cruised through doubles as Guell and Johns were first off the court with a swift 6-0 victory over Will Chen and Alexander Ruenhorst before
Samir Agadi and
Omni Kumar secured a 6-2 win against Declan O'Flynn and Connor Nelson on court three, marking their first victory as a dubs pair.
The Blue Devils closed out their undefeated weekend in style, dropping only 10 games across the six courts.
Kumar was first off for Duke quickly with a 6-0, 6-1 court three win over Ruenhorst before No. 101 Zhang collected his second dub of the day, a 6-0, 6-1 victory on court four over O'Flynn. Next off for Duke was Guell, playing to a 6-0, 6-1 court one feat as
Sean Sculley did not drop a single game (6-0, 6-0) against Matthew Slowinski. Rounding out Duke's day was Johns with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Nelson before Agadi's second dual match win of his career, a 6-1, 6-3 dub against Matthew Murphy on court six.
"Any time Samir is on the court, there is a great crowd," Smith said. "He's big man on campus. Everyone loves Samir. He has earned these opportunities and has worked extremely hard. He's been a great member of the program and we've been lucky to have him."
The Blue Devils will return to action Wednesday, March 4 at Wake Forest for a 4 p.m., match in Winston-Salem, N.C.
