DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University junior
Jaravee Boonchant will not compete with the Blue Devils at the spring opener in Palos Verdes, Calif., this weekend as she will be traveling to her home country of Thailand to see action in the Women's Amateur Asia Pacific Championship (WAAP) from Feb. 12-15. Â
Boonchant will be one of 83 golfers playing at the Siam Country Club in Pattaya, Thailand. A native of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant is currently ranked No. 14 in the latest Women's Amateur Golf Ranking and is a two-time All-America with the Blue Devils. She concluded the fall season at Duke with three straight top six finishes at the Windy City Collegiate Classic, Tar Heel Invitational and the East Lake Cup. Â
"I have always wanted to play in the WAAP since its inaugural edition, but the timing never seemed to work with my academic and college golf schedule," commented Boonchant. "This year, I finally have the opportunity to participate and I'm really looking forward to it."
The winner of the Women's amateur Asia Pacific Championship will earn starts in two women's major championships – the AIG Women's British Open and The Evian Championship – as well as invitations to the Honda LPGA Thailand, the Hana Financial Group Championship and the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA).
The championship will feature golfers from 20 Asia-Pacific countries and as the host nation, Thailand will have the largest contingent with eight representatives in the field.
"It has also been a very long time since I played a tournament in Thailand in front of my friends and family," added Boonchant. "That's another reason to be so delighted and excited to play the WAAP his year."
The par-72, 6,608-yard Waterside Course of Siam Country Club was recently named the Best Golf Course in Thailand at the Asia Pacific Awards last month. The Old Course at the club, the second oldest golf course in Thailand, was ranked 73rd in Golf Digest's Top-100 Golf Courses in the World in 2018.
The championship will be broadcast live on each of the four days. There will be nearly 600 hours of television coverage broadcast to more than 180 million households. Duke fans should be able to follow the action on the Golf Channel.
